Story Summary

This story takes place in Year 1. Vyn is not yet in a relationship with the MC.

The Main Character discusses her plans for the rest of her vacation with Vyn; coincidentally, both are going to Gruyam, a small town of Skadi accessible only by sea. Vyn intends to see a friend of his, Kara Reese, a glass artist. The MC intends to see the Golden Goddess, a phenomenon that appears when the dusk lights up the peak of Gruyam volcano, creating an illusion of a goddess descending to earth who grants wishes to those who view it. The two set out for Gruyam the next morning, where they try fermented shark meat at a recommended restaurant.

Vyn's friend, Kara, happens across the pair at the restaurant. The three of them discuss Gruyam, the Golden Goddess, and the history of the volcano's observation deck as a military airfield. Kara points out that tourist traffic has overcrowded the island, which would cause trouble in the event of an eruption of Gruyam volcano. Vyn and the MC then begin their travel of the small town, following a recommended route and ending the day with a hot spring hotel and volcano bread.

The next day, the two visit Kara's glass shop. Kara enthusiastically asks the MC to try glass-blowing for herself while Vyn checks the exhibition room in the back. Kara helps the MC make a poppy-patterned paperweight for Vyn while discussing her own husband, Olaville. The MC then goes to find Vyn and fumbles through a moment of distraction by handing him a vase that she isn't aware depicts a love spirit.

Kara takes Vyn and the MC out for coffee and explains how she knows Vyn -- through therapy she needed after her husband's death. During the conversation, a tremor quakes through the cafe, and it that the Gruyam Volcano's eruption is imminent. Officials enter the cafe and direct women and children to leave the island by boat while men await rescue at the airport. The MC makes Vyn remember a promise to see the rest of Gruyam together as they separate. Once at the docks, it's announced that due to an eruption of ash, the rescue helicopters will be unable to come for the men, who will have to wait for a second wave of ships. The MC notices a number of canoes they can add to the rescue operation; Kara helps to prepare them while the MC runs to inform Vyn and the other men.

At the airport, infighting begins among the men who have realized they will not be rescued. Vyn takes control of the situation, directing the helicopters to land at the volcano's observation deck. The new site is ash-free but risky, as the area has been destroyed by eruptions in the past, and the men resist moving but eventually yield. The MC arrives at the airport after the men have left, deduces their move to the observation deck, and catches up with Vyn before the helicopters arrive.

As rescue arrives, Vyn reveals that he'd been planning escape plans and backup escape plans since the moment he'd heard the island was overcrowded, even when he believed the volcano to be stable. Through a gap in the clouds, the MC sees the "Golden Goddess," and Vyn gifts her the item he'd had Kara make for her: a glass rose that represents the MC's beauty and tenacity. Back in Vikya, Vyn and the MC reunite with Kara, who reports that many lives were saved by the MC's idea to use the canoes at the dock. Salvage operations recover the paperweight the MC made for Vyn under Kara's supervision and mail it to him in Stellis.

Vyn: Good evening. Looks like you just finished washing up? It seems like I called at the right time.

Vyn: It is nothing important. I just wanted to thank you for the gift. I really like it.

Vyn: I am curious as to why you wanted to gift me a puzzle with a poppy motif.

Vyn: Ah, is that so. So it is related to my profession, just as I thought.

Vyn: In the language of flowers, poppies mean "peace." It really is something befitting of one's image of a psychologist.

Vyn: Also, have you noticed? Poppies are very similar to opium poppies in appearance.

Vyn: Whereas poppies are as pure as their appearance, opium poppies can be seen as a sinful flower donning a cloak of innocence. In a way, this dichotomy is similar to human nature.

Vyn: Hmm? You have met someone like this before?

Vyn: I guess it is unavoidable as an attorney. However, those kinds of people frequently use lies to disguise themselves. There are techniques you can learn to see through their lies.

Vyn: Do you still remember the micro reactions we were talking about before? For example, observing the other person's eye movements to gauge their true desires.

Vyn: Do you want to try with me? Look into my eyes, and ask me a question that you really want to know the answer to. Have a guess to see if I am lying or not.

Vyn: Are you sure you want to ask this? I do have a girl that I am interested in. Sometimes, she as unreachable as the sky itself, and other times, she is right next to me.

Vyn: So, do you think I am telling the truth or using lies to deceive you?

Vyn: You do not have to be so quick to conclude. One day, you will receive your answer.

Vyn: You should rest early tonight. Good night, let us talk another day.
