Story Summary

This story takes place in Year 1. Vyn is not yet in a relationship with the MC.

The main character arrives at Stellis University to meet Vyn for a violin concert preformed by Zoe Nelson. The MC notes that the performance was lacking in certain ways, and that her old idol Juno Watson could likely have played the piece even better if she were still playing professionally. Vyn expresses interest in Juno's story and invites the MC to a nearby cafe when she says it would take a while to explain.

The MC tells the story of the ill-fated "Violin Duo," in which Juno and Zoe entered a competition as rivals for the first time only for Juno to push Zoe down the stairs and injure her hand. Juno was diagnosed with severe bipolar disorder and sent for long-term psychological care, and Vyn reveals that she's receiving that care at his research center. He says her condition has greatly improved, and that she's deeply regretful of what happened back then. Back at home, the MC researches an upcoming competition that Juno intends to participate in as a way to see Zoe again and is shocked to find the news of Juno's return has turned the internet against Zoe. Vyn calls and says that Juno has asked to meet the MC, who agrees to the meeting.

Vyn prepares to bring the MC in to meet Juno, and the two discuss how she developed her disorder. Juno and the MC have a friendly exchange, then Vyn's assistant enters and says a woman claiming to be Zoe Nelson is asking to see Juno. Juno begs to be allowed to see Zoe and speak with her in an unsupervised visit in spite of Vyn's insistence that it would be a bad idea. Vyn agrees and passes by Zoe in the reception area on the way to fill Juno's request to buy a bouquet of flowers with the MC; upon speaking to Zoe, the pair feel Zoe was oddly cold and hurried.

At the florist, Vyn tells the MC that he's most optimistic for Juno's recovery out of all his patients. He soon receives an emergency call back to the research center, where he's told that Juno has jumped from the window of the room where she was meeting Zoe. Vyn reviews the surveillance footage of the meeting between the two, which is short and one-sided, with Zoe's verbal attacks on Juno being relentless until Juno jumps. A nurse delivers news that Juno survived her fall but may be paralyzed from the neck down, and Vyn blames himself for yielding to Juno's demands against his better judgment and begins to cry.

Vyn's breakdown continues as he asks the MC to comfort him in a hug just this once. After he composes himself, the MC returns home. Later in his study, Vyn reveals in his diary that he'd been exaggerating his pain and weakness and purposely showing her his vulnerability for a moment's warmth, and that he'd enjoyed it and hoped she'd feel sorry for him. He compares his yearning for her to an addiction that he no longer wants to suppress with logic, then says he can't stand idly by after what happened to Juno today.

Fifteen days after the incident at the research center, Vyn invites the MC to see Zoe perform at the competition the following day. The MC wants to refuse after what Zoe provoked in Juno, but Vyn presses for her trust and says Zoe will be punished. Zoe takes the stage with a heartfelt speech dedicating her piece to Juno, but she's arrested in the middle of the performance for her deeds thanks to evidence Vyn gave to the police.
