Irene Burke is Tyson Turner's personal assistant, caring for him during his time in the hospital for acute gastric cancer.[1] She became Tyson's assistant at the beginning of 2030, around the same time Simon Bloodworth disappeared, and she is noted to have more authority than a typical assistant, having taken over numerous important aspects of the company with the Board's assent. Rumors circulate among Heirson Health Products employees that she is especially crafty, and that she is Tyson's lover.[2][3]

Irene was adopted by her parents, Edwin Burke and Jade Burke, when she was six years old; details about the adoption are difficult to obtain due to its age. She is currently engaged to Jun Choi, whom she has been dating for three years; the marriage was supposed to have taken place in March of 2030, but it was postponed indefinitely when her parents disappeared.[2][3][4][5]

Physically, Irene is noted to be a "rare beauty" with an extremely impressive appearance. She's often seen wearing white gloves that bear distinctive red crosses that reference one of her favorite stories, The Count of Monte Cristo. She is fond of reading, theater, and especially acting, greatly admiring the escapism the craft enables. She once secured entry to the prestigious Dionysus Academy of Art for her acting talent, but she was unable to attend.[6]

Story[edit | edit source]

Irene's biological parents are Tyson Turner and his ex-wife, Caroline Argall.[7] She maintains the outward appearance of a cordial relationship with all four parents, referring to her adoptive parents as "mom and dad" and her biological parents as "mother and father." She often goes for trips, dinners, overnight stays, and social functions with each of her family members; neighbors note that Irene seems especially close to Jade, almost to the level of a blood relation in both behavior and appearance.[8][5]

Underneath the public appearances at play, Irene's story is far more dismal. Caroline treated her daughter as currency to use in multiple business arrangements as she pursued higher positions in her company, first to secure Edwin Burke's support with Irene's adoption and later to secure Jun Choi's with the engagement. Neither transaction was consensual or kind to Irene; Edwin would go on to abuse Irene from childhood through to adulthood, and Jun would treat her like a canary in a cage of his own making, going as far as destroying her dream of finally escaping Stellis through false accusations of academic misconduct that disqualified her from attending the Dionysus Academy. Her efforts to get support from Caroline were met with dismissals with no attempt to find out the reason for Irene's unhappiness.[9][10][11]

Irene's ordeals molded her into a bitter, vengeance-focused person, and she went on to craft a plot that would guarantee the destruction of everything all four of her parents and her fiancé held dear. She introduced Jun to her father, Tyson, in order to have Jun commit a murder; on the same night, she killed the Burke couple, planted evidence framing Jun for that crime as well since he'd have no alibi, and resolved to pin whichever body was discovered first on Jun. His arrest would bring down her mother's ambitions, and then all Irene would have to do would be to testify to Tyson's many crimes related to Heirson before leaving the country.[12][13]

Unfortunately for Irene, all three bodies were discovered in a relatively short timespan; when Jun was identified as the killer in the murder he actually committed, the frame job she put together for the Burkes' murder fell apart. Jun's defense attorney, the Main Character, went on to discover the truth and see Irene jailed for her crimes.[14]

Finding peace after being detained, Irene went on to cooperate with the investigation into Heirson's illegal activities, providing crucial testimony against Tyson Turner. She also filed a civil suit against Edwin Burke's estate, which had passed to his parents, seeking justice for his crimes against her; the Main Character represented her in this suit despite its poor prospects. Its outcome is unknown.[15]
