Joanne Scott is Gordon Grant's secretary, assistant, caretaker, and mistress. Joanne has a daughter with Gordon named Joey Grant. Joanne, Joey, and Fannie Morris (Joey's nanny) moved into the Grant Estate after Mrs. Grant's death. Joanne is aware that Harry Grant, Gordon's and Mrs. Grant's son, dislikes her.[1][2]

Story

Joanne claims to have a good relationship with Gordon and to use Joey as a means of obtaining wealth from Gordon. She also says that she studied the pharmaceutical sciences, but has forgotten most of it, and has been with Gordon ever since she graduated. Joanne tells Artem and the main character that she does not care for Joey.[2]

However, Artem's and the main character's investigations as well as Joanne knowing that Joey likes strawberry pudding strongly suggests that Joanne actually does care for Joey, which Joanne confirms.[2][3][4]

Their investigations also reveal that Joanne became a licensed pharmacist two years prior to the story and that she knows how Gordon Grant has been experimenting on Joey and is the cause for Joey's poor health. [4]

With Joanne's pharmacist license and knowledge of Gordon's experimentation, Artem and the main character theorize that Joanne could have killed Gordon by picking up Harry's dropped tablet and putting it into Gordon's medicine. However, with Fannie's unreliable testimony and Joanne's refusal to admit her actions, it is unknown whether Joanne or Harry killed Gordon.[5][6]

After the trial and after Harry promises to cover Joey's medical treatments, Joanne leaves the Gordon Estate to start a new life.[7]
