General[edit | edit source]

Jill Meadows is the elderly live-in nanny of the Graye household, caring for Letha Graye. Her grandson, Billy Chante, attended the same high school as Letha Graye and Angela Diggs. Jill was very fond of Billy before his recent suicide, for which she blames herself. She came into Letha's family's employment after being kicked out of her home by her own family in the aftermath of Billy's suicide.[1]

Jill's condition is not good for her age; she already requires a cane to walk, finds it difficult to hold silverware, and requires hearing aids.[2] She never went to school and is illiterate and innumerate.[1]

With Letha's mother having disappeared months ago, and Letha's father leaving the night of her death, Jill is likely the only witness to Letha's death. However, since her hearing aid was found in Letha Graye's room, she is also being monitored as the police's strongest suspect.[2]

Story[edit | edit source]

Investigation into Letha's death revealed that Jill's grandson, Billy, had committed terrible acts that included animal abuse and abuse of the homeless. Letha had forced Billy to write a sincere letter of repentance and give up a prized possession to show his contrition for his crimes.[3] When Jill discovered that Letha had been directly responsible for the feelings of guilt that led to Billy's suicide, she decided to punish the girl by poisoning her with an extremely painful but low-toxicity pesticide. Letha's condition caused the pesticide to reach fatal toxicity far more quickly than expected.[4] Evidence in this case was near impossible to obtain; the case only came to trial after Vyn Richter provoked Jill into repeating the crime by making her believe that Billy's crimes would go public, at which time she poisoned Vyn as well. The Main Character defended Jill in court, but her attempt to repeat the crime meant there was little room to argue for leniency.[5]

Those investigating the case could see that Jill's inability to care for herself seemed irreconcilable with her job as a live-in nanny. In fact, Letha suffered from a condition that caused her to lose all memory of her life and previous family; before her memory loss was complete, she selected new family members to care for her. It's suspected that she selected Jill as her new grandmother specifically because of the indulgence and coddling with which she treated Billy, which led to his poor behavior.[5]
