Skadi has a tradition of eating shark meat. Modern times have seen shark consumption moved to responsibly farmed sources so as not to endanger local species of shark. Another highly recommended dish is volcanic bread, which is rye bread left to slow-bake in a hot spring for 24 hours. Faeries are integral to nearly all of Skadi Island's myths and legends, with many residents still believing in the existence of these invisible creatures who live alongside them in their everyday lives. The faerie academy in Vikya teaches the faeries' origin as follows: "According to the legends on Skadi Island, faeries and humans were both created at the same time. Dissatisfied with the hypocrisy and lies of mankind, God concealed the faeries, who were simple in nature. Ever since then, humans have not been able to see the faeries, unless fairies decide to reveal themselves." The creatures are noted to more closely resemble classical depictions of dwarves -- small, with pointed noses and wrinkled skin -- rather than what other nations might think of as fairies.
Despite their reclusive life in Skadi's forests, faeries are said to occasionally take human form and seek help from humans. Those who help them are blessed with fortune and happiness, while those who disturb them are punished.
Holidays celebrated on Skadi Island include "Guardian Memorial Day," in which residents make and paint shields with red runes commemorating brave ancient guardians of Skadi. They also dress as the guardians and put on various activities and rituals. Skadi Island is noted to be a popular tourist destination. Due to the culture, food, architecture, ecology, and historical events depicted in the nation, it is suspected to roughly correspond to real-world Iceland.
Regions
Vikya
Vikya is said to be a paradise of art, with numerous museums, street art, and lively graffiti throughout the town.
Known shops and facilities in Vikya include a souvenir shop in the business district near a textiles shop, a post office, and multiple handicrafts shops. There is also a mall on the east side of the business district. Other tourist attractions include Biho Hot Springs and Vox bar.
Holy Faerie Chapel
One of the holidays noted to be celebrated in this chapel is Faerie Prayer Day. Tradition holds that those who pray and make a wish in the Holy Faerie Chapel on this day will receive the faeries' blessing and see their wishes fulfilled.
=Faerie Academy
The Academy is located on the outskirts of Vikya. The school is said to look like it's straight from a fairy tale, with intricate wooden houses and sculptures. Subjects taught include the origins of faeries, nursery rhymes and songs related to faeries, their portrayal in movies and TV, and field trips to a faerie cottage in the forest.
Faerie Town
Faerie Town is so named because it's built on and surrounded by volcanic rock, rendering it impenetrable, like the mythical birthplace of the faeries.
Within Faerie Town are faerie huts -- small houses built by the locals to house faeries. Skadi residents believe they can receive blessings by praying to the faeries that reside in these cottages. Additionally, piles of colorful stones adorn Faerie Town, with a rumor that circling the stones three times clockwise will reveal the faerie houses on them. Another tradition in the area sees children leave flowers at the faerie cottages; if the flowers are accepted by the faeries, they will send the gift wanted most by the person who left the flowers.
Gullin Falls
Manor of Hermes
Located in a forest near Gullin Falls, the Manor of Hermes is a relatively unknown destination among Skadi's many other popular attractions, said to be a legend only among locals. Few know the truth of the century-old manor; the most popular legend is that it is the "Demon's Tomb" that sealed away the "Lord of Nightmare" who once tried to destroy Skadi Island, and that on polar nights, the Lord of Nightmare wanders the manor dressed in white, stealing the souls of hapless visitors. Those who do go to the manor tend to keep their silence or warn other potential visitors away. On the rare occasion that a visitor is thought to be worthy to investigate the manor, that person is given a puzzle box called "Erin's Winter" that will allow the person to open the manor's deepest rooms and learn its truths.
Night Beach
Local legends claim that Night Beach was the site of an ancient battle between faeries and demons, and that the demons' remains are the reason the volcanic basalt sand and rock here is black. The same legend states that if you listen to a conch on the beach, you can hear the battle. It's also said that hidden within the sound of the battle is the blessing of the faeries' Goddess; those who hear this sound will see the Goddess reveal herself and grant her blessing.
Night Beach is noted to have a unique pink sunset, and it's home to sea turtles and Arctic terns.
Sakya Fjord
Sakya Fjord is noted to be home to various wildlife, including arctic foxes, puffins, eiders, and brown trout. Sakya Fjord is on the opposite end of Skadi Island from Vikya; one train ride between the two locations was noted to take well over 12 hours.
Muller's Ranch
One of the selling points of the ranch is that everything is done manually, so there are few automated machines on site, and most chores must be done by hand. Some of the activities available to guests at Muller's Ranch include sheep shearing, horse feeding and riding, and watching puffins bred by the ranch. The ranch also spins their sheep's wool into yarn and other textiles, selling these products on-site as a secondary textile business.
Seti Falls
On top of the mountains near Seti Falls lies the wreckage of the "Plane at the End of Time," which received its name after being in a movie; this is where the above-mentioned Siren is allegedly at rest. Legend has it that when the Siren begins to sing, the plane's wreckage will be restored, and it will bring all those who hear the song to another world.
Seti Falls is noted to be home to many seabirds.
Gruyam
Gruyam is a small town in Skadi whose nearby mountains render it inaccessible except by ship or air. It is known for its proximity to the Gruyam Volcano, which is called the "Diamond of Skadi Island" due to the shining diamond-like light that reflects from its snow-capped peak at sunrise. It's also known as the site of the "Golden Goddess," a rarer sight in which the dusk on a clear day illuminates the peak and resembles a goddess descending to the earth, which is said to grant wishes to those who view the phenomenon. A popular tourist guide for Gruyam notes 11 tourist attractions in the small town.
The Gruyam volcano's eruptions have shaped the area; modern Gruyam was established when people resettled the land after a destructive eruption that left the previous settlement in ruins while fertilizing the soil in the area. Upon the ruins, there is now an observation deck from which tourists may observe the "Golden Goddess." This observation deck also served a military purpose as a secret airfield during wartime. In the event of an eruption, evacuation must take place by sea and air, so it is important to keep enough transport for all residents immediately available.
After a century of stability, Gruyam volcano had an incomplete eruption recently, leaving the town temporarily uninhabitable as the ash settles.
Culture
Cuisine
Skadi has a tradition of eating shark meat. Modern times have seen shark consumption moved to responsibly farmed sources so as not to endanger local species of shark. One of their most adventurous dishes is fermented shark meat, which is traditionally paired with Brennevin. Another highly recommended dish is volcanic bread, which is rye bread left to slow-bake in a hot spring for 24 hours. Coffee in Skadi is not ordered by the cup, but instead by saying "ten drops of coffee." Skadi's local wine is noted by residents to be quite strong. Finally, a dessert specialty on the island is a refreshing cilantro chocolate.
Religion and Mysticism
The runes on the shields mean "far away" and are meant to ensure their guardians never lose their way, even if they journey far from home.
One of Skadi's romantic traditions involves a "Spirit of Love," which is tied to a legend about a man and woman who were in love but too shy to show it. The Spirit of Love helped them confess to each other, and in modern times, those who are too shy to express feelings of love may gift an object related to the Spirit of Love to the objects of their affection.
History
While much is known of Skadi's legendary history and culture, the island's factual history rarely comes up in conversation. One thing that is known is that in the 1980s, Skadi was at war with a neighboring country, and that using Gruyam as an airfield for military supply operations contributed to Skadi's victory.
