Luke "Twinkling Eyes"/Rewards

Story Summary

This story takes place in Year 1. Luke is not yet in a relationship with the MC.

In a hotel room in Vikya, Luke frantically chases Peanut, who has stolen something important. The chase makes him late for breakfast with the Main Character, but rather than explain, he makes up an excuse: his morning run was unusually long because he met some elderly residents discussing faeries. Interested in Skadi's faerie lore, the two decide to go to a faerie academy for the day. Upon hearing the visitors' class is only a day long and awards a diploma, the two sign up, eager to be classmates once more.

The next day, Luke and the MC arrive for class and begin learning about Skadi's faeries. As Luke takes notes in his book, the MC recalls a memory of their dynamic as high school deskmates. Satisfied with their class, the two sign up for more, including a trip to a faerie cottage in the forest. Luke brings Peanut along on the trip, and the academy teacher suggests Peanut might be able to see the faeries where humans can't. Luke makes a comment hoping they can teach Peanut a lesson since he's been misbehaving, which confuses the MC.

Luke receives a phone call that he needs to step away and take, leaving Peanut with the MC. The teacher begins to explain the faerie cottages in the area. Peanut suddenly takes off from the MC's shoulder and enters one of the small homes, knocking out its door and pulling out several decorations before Luke arrives and calms him down. The two apologize and promise to repair the hut, and the teacher recommends a man who lives at the foot of the mountain who might help them. The MC ponders what punishment the faeries might bring, and as Luke claims not to believe in the supernatural, a hidden root trips him and causes them both to fall into a snowbank.

The two meet Johansen Stevens, who lives nearby and cares for the faerie cottages in the area. While they make a new door and wall for the damaged cottage, snowfall makes the return journey unsafe, so they have to stay overnight in a cabin on the man's property. As Luke and the MC settle in for the night, something Luke suspects is an animal tries to enter the home. The MC is left unable to sleep, worried it was part of the faeries' punishment and fearful that either another animal will come as she sleeps or that she'll have a nightmare. Luke promises to protect her and sings her a lullaby.

Aaron calls Luke while the MC sleeps, pointing out that it's Valentine's Day and questioning Luke about any gift he might give; Luke acknowledges he made the MC a gift, but says he didn't intend it to be a Valentine's Day gift. The MC wakes up late, finding that Luke has gone out to buy dried flowers for the faerie cottage. They return to the damaged cottage, clean out the remnants of the overnight snowstorm, repaint the hut, and discuss decorating a future home in the same fairytale style.

The academy teacher returns to pick Luke and the MC up, praising their care with the faerie cottage and offering the two some local wine. They get tispy, and the teacher leaves to spend Valentine's Day with his wife. Peanut once again tries to steal the item in Luke's pocket, revealing a small ornate bag to the MC and forcing Luke to give the gift -- a pair of earrings in the shape of a raven and rose -- on Valentine's Day. The MC becomes flustered and is unable to express her appreciation for Luke before he changes the subject. Back at the hotel, Aaron calls again and picks on Luke for letting Peanut be more forward with the MC than Luke himself is.

Luke: Good evening. We haven't talked in days. Were you worried about me?

Luke: *sigh* ... I received an emergency task a few days ago, so I never got the chance to say anything to you before I left... I've been busy with my business trip these couple of days.

Luke: ... Why the silent treatment? Are you angry?

Luke: As long as you aren't angry. I promise you, I contacted you the moment I was free. Look, I haven't even had the chance to take off my jacket yet!

Luke: Looks like you're going home already? Did you receive the package I sent you?

Luke: You didn't? That's not right... It should've arrived already... I saw that it was in the middle of delivery this morning when I checked the status.

Luke: Man... I've exposed myself, haven't I? I was planning to give you a surprise!

Luke: Are you asking me what I sent? That's something I can't tell you, otherwise there'd be nothing to look forward to!

Luke: Don't worry, it's nothing weird. It's all stuff you like to ea- Whoops, I said too much...

Luke: Are you secretly laughing at me? Don't even try to pretend.

Luke: When I'm working, I need to be focused and alert. It is only when I'm talking to you like this, that I can loosen up a bit.

Luke: I think this is why I accidentally make such simple mistakes whenever I'm with you.

Luke: Never mind then. It's fine, I'll tell you. I sent you a box of snacks.

Luke: I have a friend over here that makes desserts. He gave me some of the store's new special desserts, so I sent them all to you.

Luke: Anyways, I'm all sweaty, so I'm gonna go take a shower. Don't forget to try the desserts out when the package arrives tomorrow. Tell me how they are, yeah?
