Today, Mr. Way told you that there has been some progress in locating Berry's owner.
As you and Marius learn of this after returning to the von Hagen estate, the two of you fall silent.
It all started fifteen minutes ago.
Marius: Payton, you mean to say that Berry has no owner?
Payton Way: Yes, Master Marius. According to my investigation, no one in the Villa District seems to be Berry's owner.
Marius: You mean that Berry came to the Villa District from somewhere else?
Payton Way: Nothing seems to point to that assumption. My investigation revealed that Berry has been living in the Villa District for a very long time.
Payton Way: According to some people, Berry will visit a villa that he sets his eyes on now and then.
Payton Way: After staying there for a while, Berry will leave on his own. The people that have housed and fed Berry assumed that Berry simply went home and never went looking for him.
Marius seems to have finally found his voice and looks toward Berry in shock.
Marius: So Berry is a stray... and is living a pretty good life since people are taking care of him?
Mr. Way nods.
Payton Way: After learning about Berry's situation, several households that have looked after him in the past have expressed their willingness to formally adopt Berry.
You: Although Berry is a stray, there are actually many people who are willing to become his owner.
Berry begins to wave his tail in satisfaction. You're not sure if he understood your conversation.
Berry: Meow.
With the situation at hand, it seems like you won't be able to find out who's Berry's owner for the time being.
Although Berry is enjoying the von Hagen estate right now, things may be different when Marius' Pharaoh Hound returns.
It would be irresponsible if Marius was to adopt Berry before knowing how the two get along.
You: Oh, Berry, we never knew you were a kitty with such a complicated background.
Marius: Looks like there will need to be some communication before settling on who Berry's owner is.
Berry wanders unconcernedly past the two of you as if this has nothing to do with him.
His long, thin tail points high, and his furry bum sways as he strides.
You suddenly realize you forgot something very important.
You: Berry is a stray and doesn't have an owner. Doesn't that mean he should've been neutered a long time ago?
Marius: !!!
Payton Way: We did a full-body examination on Berry when he first got here. His age and general health do satisfy the requirements for being neutered.
You: But we thought that Berry had an owner, so...
The attention of three humans in the living room is suddenly all focused on Berry. He notices the shift in the room and turns around to look at the three of you.
Marius: Berry... Neuter...
Marius mumbles the two words under his breath as he gazes peculiarly at Berry.
Berry: Meeeeow!
Marius smirks.
Marius' gaze has made the fur on Berry's back stand up. Berry looks at him warily and quickly runs away.
You: Marius! Berry's on the run!
Marius: Hey, Berry, where are you going?
You and Marius dive toward Berry at the same time, but neither of you manages to catch him.
Payton Way: Master Marius, do you need assistance?
Marius: Payton, I'm gonna catch him myself this time. Go ahead and tend to your business.
Marius rolls up his sleeves and seems to be preparing for a good fight.
You look at Marius' exposed skin and grab his hand to roll his sleeves back down.
You: It's true that Berry's claws have been trimmed, but they are still very sharp...
You: Be careful, after all...
You: (To Berry, this is a battle of dignity...)
Marius listens, raising his arms and watching as you roll his sleeves down.
Marius: You're so thoughtful.
Marius: Don't worry, Berry's not getting away from me this time.
