As you paint the last stroke of the outline of the petals, you put down your brush to admire the "semi-finished product" in front of you.

You are trying to build an easy-assembly painting toolbox kit.

To add an element of surprise, you decided to paint a purple rose inside the lid of the toolbox.

However... you didn't expect this decision to have complicated the process, making it harder for you to finish it.

You: I know that painting isn't easy... but I didn't expect it to be THIS hard.

You: ...Why does my rose look so flat...

You: (It looks so rough... Is this what Marius meant by "soulless" painting?)

You: If I'd known that from the start, I would have just asked him to teach me...

As you put down the paintbrush, your mind drifts back to one week ago.

Marius: Oh? You're looking for... a painting tutorial?

You: Yeah... a video would be great... like an online class. Or maybe you could recommend a book...

After listening to your explanation, Marius blinks, then smiles knowingly.

Marius: I get it. Leave it to me. Mr. von Hagen's class is guaranteed to improve your painting skill.

Marius: And of course, it will be a... one-to-one private lesson.

You: ...

His offer is tempting, but you can't help to think about how this might ruin the surprise. After all, it's for his birthday... You shake your head as you think about it.

You: No, it's not for me... I'm asking for a friend.

You feel a little guilty for telling a white lie.

But Marius tips his head slightly, deep in thought. Then, he replies.

Marius: Hmph... looks like you're not willing to give me a chance, Miss.

You: A chance to do what?

Marius: A chance for me to be a fun teacher who brings joy to the classroom.

Amused by his earnestness, you relax a little.

You: Why didn't I realize that you were "a fun teacher" before?

Marius: You probably don't know, but one of my ambitions was to be a teacher.

You: Didn't you want to become an artist?

Marius: Well, I said it was one of them... I wanted to do so many things when I was a child...

Marius: Anyway, it's a shame... There's so much that... I can never do.

After a brief moment of disappointment, Marius smiles, lowering his head to fiddle with the painting tools on the table.

You: ...

After being together for so long, you understand what some of his mannerisms mean.

Maybe he's long forgotten the unhappiness from his childhood... or maybe he's had to bury it deep down in his heart to perfect his necessary roles in life.

After thinking for a moment, you ask...

You: ...What else did you want to do when you were younger?

Marius: Well, let me think... Share snacks with friends, go to the park together, play tennis...

Every wish that Marius describes sounds like a small and mundane day-to-day experience for most people. As you listen to him listing them out, your heart tightens.

Marius: Hm? Why are you frowning? Could it be... the things I mentioned brought you bad memories?

That's when you realize that you were frowning. Looking at his worried expression, a bitter ache courses through your heart.

You: N-No.

You: (You fool. Why are you worrying about me at a time like this...)

You: Other than the stuff you mentioned, is there anything else you want to do?

Marius: Anything else? ...Miss, why are you asking me that?

You catch a glimpse of surprise in his expression as he looks at you, but it's swiftly replaced by a warm smile.

Marius: Oh, I know. Considering the timing... Could it be that you're preparing a birthday surprise for me?

You: W-why would... you say that...

Despite knowing that there's a possibility he knew your plan, you stubbornly refuse to admit it.

Marius: All right, all right, I'll just pretend I don't know a thing.

Marius: Just to let you know, I'll be free for the next few days. So...

You: So you're all mine for the next few days.

Marius: No complaints here.

You: ...

You: Hey, you still haven't answered my question.

Marius: Oh, something I wanted to do when I was little...

Marius recalls many past events from his childhood with great interest.

Bedroom

Coming back to the present, you look at the box in front of you.

You: (How many days are left before his birthday...?)

After listening to Marius' story that day, you made up your mind.

In addition to giving him a gift, you decide to accompany him in doing everything he failed to do during his childhood, recreating those childhood memories together.

You can't go back in time, back to the past, or back to Marius' childhood to embrace him in his loneliness...

But...

You: It's never too late to stand by his side and make up for those missed opportunities, right?

Together, you can create new, happy memories to replace the bad ones.

You pull out a notepad and jot down all the childhood dreams that Marius mentioned.

You: Marius, let's enjoy the next few days together...
