Follow the doctor to guestroom R2.

You follow the doctor over to the passenger carriages where the interior layout remains the same except for a few crystal ornaments.

You: Dr. Miller... is it really okay for us to enter the passengers' rooms?

Dr. Miller: Haha, it's all right.

Dr. Miller: As soon as I got on the train, I realized how special this room was, and how suitable it is for research. So I communicated with the passenger in advance.

Dr. Miller: It turns out she is a fan of occultism. When I told her about the Bakerlon crystals, she offered to lend me her room during the day.

You: I see...

Dr. Miller: Now, let me demonstrate how to use the scanner.

You: All right.

Thus, Dr. Miller takes the scanner out of the metallic box and turns it on. He then points it in one corner of the room and runs it...

Soon, a new interface appears on the screen, which resembles the complete floor plan of the room.

You look around the room, then at the interface, where there are lit-up icons that correspond to the crystal ornaments already in the room.

Other than that, there are a few gray icons, which seem to indicate that something is missing.

What's more, there are different colored lines that connect the lit-up crystals...

You: These gray icons... represent where the Bakerlon crystals should be?

Dr. Miller: Yes, you are quite perceptive, Miss [Player].

Dr. Miller: In scanning the room, the device will automatically simulate the optimal crystal distribution.

Dr. Miller: If we place crystals in these locations, it's highly likely that the magnetic field will stabilize.

You: That's amazing... What do these lines represent?

Dr. Miller: These lines represent the interactions between crystals.

You: Interactions...? I thought they represented the magnetic fields produced by the crystals...

Dr. Miller continues explaining, seeing that you are still puzzled.

Dr. Miller: Each Bakerlon crystal has its own weak magnetic field, based on its purity and resolution...

Dr. Miller: And these weak magnetic fields interact with each other, causing attraction...

Dr. Miller: The lines that you see here represent their interactions.

Dr. Miller: As for magnetic fields... those are the result of their interactions.

Dr. Miller: Not all interactions can produce magnetic fields, but magnetic fields are a product of interactions.

Dr. Miller: Bakerlon crystals are a type of ore, so that's naturally the case.

Dr. Miller: From this point of view, the magnetic fields of natural ores are more unstable and malleable.

Dr. Miller: And artificial magnetic fields are much more stable.

You: (I kinda get it, but not really...)

You: Hmm... so you're saying that I can use the scanner to see how the Bakerlon crystals interact with each other?

Dr. Miller: Yes, feel free to use the scanner wherever you go on this train.

Dr. Miller: Of course, scanning and gathering information are just its basic functions...

Dr. Miller: There are other features you can use at night that you can try out if you're interested.

Dr. Miller: Anyway, the device is now in your hands so make good use of it.

You: Understood. I'll check out the other special locations later.

Guestroom R2: Abundant Minerals - R2

Place the crystals in the remaining spots in room R2.

After placing the last piece of Bakerlon crystal, you open the scanner that Dr. Miller gave you.

The gray icon is now lit-up, and the interactions between the crystals have also shifted.

You: What should I do next...?

You think to yourself as you tap on the screen...

Despite your repeated trial and error, nothing changes on the scanner, and the screen still shows the interactions between crystals.

You: Where did I go wrong...? Wait!

You: Dr. Miller said the scanner also has some night features... Why don't I come back here at night?

You: Oh... But I need to ask the passenger for permission...

You: If all goes well, I can even ask Luke to come! He's better with devices than I am.

Just as you make up your mind to leave, there is a loud beeping in your ear.

You can't help covering your ears and closing your eyes.

When you open your eyes again, you detect a slight change in the room...

There are fine luminescent particles floating in the air, creating a strange atmosphere.

???: Miss [Player], are you okay?

Your thoughts are interrupted by a voice of concern coming from behind you. You turn around to find Simon, the conductor, checking up on the situation.

You: Simon... I'm fine, it's just...

You tell the conductor what happened in the room...

You: Sorry, I didn't know it would turn out like this... Sorry for the trouble.

Simon: It's no trouble at all. It's my job to deal with emergencies and serve every passenger well.

Simon: However... this room is no longer suitable for passengers to stay in. As such, I will arrange another room for the passenger staying in this room.

Simon: Leave it to me.

You: Okay...

Simon: Oh, since you and Dr. Miller are doing research on Bakerlon crystals, and acquired the passenger's permission...

Simon: You're free to use the room as you please after I make the arrangements.

You: Eh? Really?

Simon: Of course. Strange phenomena have appeared in this room, and we cannot assign other passengers to this room.

Simon: I thought it would be better for you to continue using it, rather than leave it empty.

You: That makes sense...

Simon: If you encounter similar situations in the future, please let us handle it.

Simon: If I am busy, ask one of the crew members for help.

You: Thank you, Simon.

Simon: It's my pleasure.

The conductor smiles at you and says a few more words before leaving the room.

You: For some reason, it feels like a blessing in disguise...

You: Anyway, I'll ask Luke to accompany me tonight.

Guestroom R2: Night Investigation - R2

Check out the room at night.

You: Luke, you're already here.

Luke: Of course, I had to arrive early since you asked for my help.

Luke: I have to say, it does feel a bit weird here... Not normal at all.

Luke: Well then, let's turn on the scanner.

You: All right.

Just as Dr. Miller said, there is a new button on the screen that represents the night features.

Pressing the button loads a completely new interface with only the Bakerlon crystals, which you can now drag around...

You: Well...

Luke: ...

Luke takes the scanner from your hand and thinks for a moment, then smiles at you.

Luke: Didn't Dr. Miller say these lines represent the interaction between crystals?

Luke: Now that we can adjust the crystals' locations... Won't we be able to find the most suitable acting force between the crystals?

You: Yeah... Now that you mention it, I think that's it.

You: If our theory is correct, after finding the most suitable acting force, the location of the crystals in the room should change as well.

You: But what happens after that?

Luke: Well... I'm not sure about that. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

You: You're right.

Luke: It's getting late, so let's get started.

Luke: You find the most suitable acting force, and I'll help you move the crystals.

You: Okay, no problem.

Guestroom R2: Change Acting Force - R2

Adjust the crystals to find the most suitable acting force.

With the crystal locations changed, a faint fog begins to pour in from the four corners of the room...

Luke pulls you back a few steps, looking around the room cautiously.

At this moment, a faint shadow appears in the center of the room.

You look at the almost-transparent shadow, an indescribable feeling rising in your heart...

You: Could it be... after we changed the crystal locations...?

Luke: Looks like it, but we still have to be vigilant.

You: Yes...

Guestroom R2: Terrible Past - R2

A strange phenomenon has appeared. Listen to what the figure says.

A half-transparent shadow stands in the center of the room, adding to the ghostly feeling of the fog.

???: Waaah... waaah...

You: (It made a sound!?)

Seeing the shadow move, Luke gently tugs on your clothes, making a shushing gesture.

So the two of you hold your breaths and stare at the half-transparent shadow, waiting for its next move...

???: Ka... all your... your...

???: Baker... Daily, find... must...

???: ...*Sobs*...

You: Luke, what's it saying?

Luke: ...

Luke doesn't respond to you as you hear the shadow repeat itself over and over.

Hidden behind the seemingly random words, spoken in a low voice, is a great sorrow...

Luke: [Player], I think it... mentioned a newspaper just now.

You: Not the full name, but if you think about it...

You: It should be the Bakerlon Daily, right?

Luke: If it's the Bakerlon Daily, then it was probably mentioning something that happened a hundred years ago.

You: A hundred years ago!?

Luke: Yeah, as far as I know, the Bakerlon Daily is the predecessor of the Bakerlon Mining Daily. The name changed within 50 or 60 years of its founding...

Luke: If "it" was someone from a modern age... I don't think that name would've come up.

Hearing Luke's explanation, you can't help but nod.

Recalling what the shadow said, an idea flashes through your mind.

You: In that case, could it have meant "Kahn" when it said "Ka"? The Kahn family was also around a hundred years ago.

You: Something that was around a hundred years ago, has something to do with Bakerlon, and starts with "Ka"...

You: The only thing I can think of that meets these conditions is the Kahn family.

Luke: Yeah, I think so too.

Just as you and Luke are about to continue the discussion, the half-transparent shadow starts speaking once more.

Like a broken tape recorder, trying to play whatever old tapes it has left...

???: ...Shouldn't have taken their money... Shouldn't have.

???: But Mother is sick... Shouldn't have... Sorry.

???: Forgive me... please...

You: ...

Luke: ...

You: Who... is it apologizing to?

Luke looks down, deep in thought, then shakes his head.

Luke: It's difficult to draw accurate conclusions from the available information... Let's just think about how these words might be connected.

You: You do have a point there...

Luke: It mentioned its mother's sickness and said in a guilty tone that it shouldn't have taken the money.

Luke: That suggests that its family wasn't very well-off during that time.

Luke: Under dire family circumstances, coupled with an urgent need to pay for medical expenses, it was forced to accept the money.

You: Did... its actions hurt others? Is that why it's apologizing...?

Luke: That's a reasonable explanation.

At that moment, you think back to what the shadow first said, and a bold idea occurs to you...

You: It was forced by circumstances to take the money, but that ended up hurting others...

You: Does that mean the source of the money was illegal?

You: According to our previous analysis, the first word was "Kahn"...

You: What if there was something shady going on with the Kahn family a hundred years ago, and that's why they're paying people off?

You: And it is one of them?

Hearing your speculation, Luke nods, deep in thought.

Luke: It's quite possible. After all, silencing people with money is the most common way for people in power to cover up their mistakes.

You: In that case, the person it's apologizing to...

Before you can think it over, the shadow starts speaking again...

???: I wanted... to work more hours... mine... more...

???: But they forced me... forced me... wouldn't let me... sorry...

???: ...*Sobs*... I'm so sorry...

Luke: !?

You: !!!

After a brief moment, you and Luke come to your senses and understand the connection.

You: Work more hours mining? That means... it should be a miner, right?

Luke: Yes... there is a high probability that the shadow is a miner of the Kahn mines a hundred years ago...

Luke: If we think about it this way, then it connects everything we've discussed!

Luke: When something happened to the Kahn family a hundred years ago, they chose to silence people with money, including this miner.

Luke: And then it felt bad about accepting the money against its will... So it offered to work more hours instead.

Luke: But the Kahn family refused this offer and pressed it. In the end, it gave in, which caused harm to others.

You: Yeah... that makes sense.

You: But what does that have to do with Bakerlon Daily?

Luke: ...

Looking at each other in silence, you and Luke then look at the shadow, hoping for any more information.

But the half-transparent shadow repeats the same thing over and over again, not saying anything else.

It's as if those repeated words were its deepest obsession...

You: I don't think we'll get any more information out of it.

Luke: Yeah, I think that's it.

You: Let's discuss this with the others when we get back.

You: We should tell everyone to keep an eye out for anything on the train that might give us more clues.

Luke: Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.
