Vyn "Near and Far"/Rewards

Story Summary

The main character, having expressed an interest in meeting one of Vyn's patients with Dissociative Identity Disorder, goes on a walk with a kind and sweet Kirstie Gonzales, who apologizes for one of her alters having frightened the MC earlier that day. As Kirstie recounts her family history, a new personality emerges and threatens the MC with a knife. The MC recalls the circumstances of their meeting two hours prior, when she'd just arrived at the hospital shortly before an alarm sounded....

The alarm led to Kirstie's room, where a violent outburst was taking place; Kristie's "father" alter cursed his daughter but denied ever hurting Kirstie's boyfriend, then expressed rage for having been blamed for the murder by Artem and hospitalized. The alter then attacked the MC for her association with Artem, but Vyn intervened and had the patient sedated. When the gentle version of Kirstie returned to consciousness, the MC took her out on a walk, and the perspective returns to the present, where it becomes clear that the new alter threatening the MC in the woods is Kirstie's "big sister," the actual murderer of Kirstie's boyfriend.

Kirstie's "big sister" attacks the MC, but Vyn appears in the nick of time and takes the attack with his forearm before sedating Kirstie again. The MC offers to dress the injury for him despite his insistence that he has the professional expertise to be sure it isn't severe.

The MC dresses Vyn's wound, but she finds it won't stop bleeding and makes him go to the infirmary. Back in Kirstie's room, Kirstie recounts more of her family history, revealing information that, combined with an earlier conversation, suggests Kirstie's real big sister may have killed her real father. The MC reassures Kirstie that she's a good person and her sister would have wanted her to get better.

Kirstie asks the MC to apologize to Vyn for having injured him; the MC remembers that Vyn had previously told her that different alters do not share memory. She realizes she's still in danger and slowly leaves to avoid alarming the violent alter as Kirstie slips smoothly into the "big sister's" voice and asks her to visit again. In the hall, the MC runs into Vyn, who overheard the conversation and reveals Kirstie never had a sister. Vyn then presents his final theories on how her personality originally fractured.

Vyn reassures the MC that the day's incidents will ultimately help Kirstie's treatment, then drives her home. Back at the hospital, Vyn speaks to Kirstie's "big sister" with coldness, admitting he intended the MC to wake the dormant main persona the whole time. He tells her that he'll reintegrate her personalities so that she can live her life in the hospital full of regret and guilt as punishment for her having killed someone who loved her with all his heart, and she curses him as a madman in response.

Vyn: If you are tired, please retire for the night. You may catch a cold if you fall asleep on your desk.

Vyn: I saw your message from earlier. Was there something you needed my assistance with?

Vyn: My profession is dangerous? Why do you say that? Did you come across something?

Vyn: That article may have been exaggerating. Psychiatry is not as dangerous as you believe it is.

Vyn: Though some patients may be considered eccentric, most of them are not aggressive.

Vyn: That article discusses an extreme minority. Please do not worry.

Vyn: However, I am happy to know that you are this concerned about me.

Vyn: Aside from the previous incident with Kirstie, no other patients have attempted to harm me.

Vyn: No need to apologize. I told you that I would gladly shield you from any harm. Besides...

Vyn: Using this scar as a way for you to always remember me is quite the bargain.

Vyn: You are blushing...

Vyn: It appears... I hold a special place in your heart.

Vyn: All right, settle down. It was a jest.

Vyn: It is late. Rest well. Good night.
