Kulu Mine
Following the route that the boy told you about, you successfully enter Kulu Mine from the back door.
It's very busy in the mine. Everyone is working monotonously and emotionlessly, just like robots at a factory's conveyor belt.
Most of the miners are unfazed when they hear about why you're here.
But there is still a small handful of them who are willing to tell you what happened in whispered conversations.
Miner A: I wouldn't be able to withstand another day here if it weren't for a fact that I have to support my family as the breadwinner.
Miner B: We have no life outside of work. It's really depressing.
Miner A: Everyone here knows about what happened with Mark, but none of us dare talk about it.
Miner A: Yeah. If we leak word of that out, then we'd lose all our wages.
Miner A: You might not know, but they have people watching us our every move daily after that incident with Mark.
Miner B: Right. Didn't Gerry get dragged back the other day...? *Sigh*
More and more miners start joining the conversation... Perhaps because they rarely get the chance to talk between themselves.
From there, it snowballed as the miners brought up one unfair treatment after another.
You carefully record every piece of useful information they speak of. Suddenly, someone storms up angrily to you.
Mining Boss: Who let you guys in!? Get out of here!
[Debate]
You: We've got evidence that this mine has broken the law. You may as well give up.
Mining Boss: Hmph! So what? I have the final say here.
Luke: Not necessarily. Stop struggling. You'll get caught sooner or later for your illegal acts.
Luke: I've already told the police about what happened in the mine and how the miners reacted before you showed up.
Luke waves his phone, which displays his previous call history with the local police from just 10 minutes ago.
Luke: The police will be here at any minute now. You can save anything you have to say for them.
The mine manager's expression instantly does a whole 360.
10 minutes later, the police arrive and takes him away, promising that this will be resolved soon.
The miners could hardly believe what's happening. They gather in a group once the police leave the premises.
Miner A: Gosh, is this for real? The police just said that they'd send someone here to supervise our mine?
Miner B: ...I must be dreaming. Did they just say that they'd get us the unpaid wages that the mine owes us all!?
You: It's all true, so rest assured.
Miner B: I just didn't expect.... this to happen all in one day. It's like a dream. come true!
Miner A: Thank you. Thank you so much.
Luke: You're welcome. We haven't done much, really.
You: By the way, I still have some questions... Can we talk more about this?
Miner A: Certainly. Ask away! I'll tell you whatever I know.
You: Did you guys go looking for Mark after that?
Miner A: Yes, we did. We searched every nook and cranny under the cliff, but we never found him. There wasn't a single trace of his being there.
Miner A: *Sign* ...Who knows what happened to him.
Miner A: We couldn't stray too far to look for him because the mine was keeping a close eye on everything.
Miner A: Honestly, the cliff he jumped off wasn't particularly high either. Plus, there's a river under it, so he should be fine...
You: (That means Mark is most likely still alive.)
You: Where was the spot where Mark jumped off?
Miner A: It's near the newly opened diamond deposit at the back of the mine.
Miner A: Mark jumped straight off the cliff and none of us could stop him in time...
Luke: Hmm. We ought to poke around the cliff later on.
You: Okay. Maybe we'll find some clues there.
You: What kind of person is Mark?
Miner A: Mark can be a bit quick to get mad, but he's got a heart of gold.
Miner A: I remember that one time I was falling way behind on my work. He stuck in there shoulder-to-shoulder with me and helped me finish it all up.
Miner A: *Sign* I really hope he's okay...
You: Don't worry. I'm sure he'll be fine.
Miner A: Do you have any other questions?
You: No. I've got everything I need to know about Mark. Thank you.
Soon, the local police return to the mine and ask the miners to cooperate with the investigation.
If the accusation stands true, the mining company will have to pay for breaking the law.
All the effort spent was worthwhile.
Mining Boss: Who's letting you ask questions here? Get out of here now!
You: (This guy is really unreasonable...)
You: (Calm down! Let me see what else I can say to refute him.)
