Mine Garden
The train stops near the Kulu mine. But scaling the mountain is not as easy as you thought.
You take a detour by going around the mine and arriving at the nearby garden...
Luke: ...The trails here are quite complicated.
You: What's wrong? Is there a problem?
Luke: I was going to go around the entrance to see if I could get into the mine from the side...
Luke: But now, it seems like this route is much further than I thought. The GPS isn't very accurate in the mountains.
You: How about we take a break? We can conserve our strength and find another route.
Luke: Yeah. I think a break is in order.
Just as you are going to sit down on the lawn for a break...
???: Why is daddy not here yet...? He does this all the time...
The voice of a little boy catches your attention.
You turn around to see a little boy sitting on the grassland, uninterestedly batting a straw-woven ball to and fro.
You: What's wrong, little buddy?
Boy: I'm waiting for my dad. Why isn't he back from the mountains yet? He promised to play with me after work...
Boy: *Sob* Actually, I haven't seen him for a long time...
You and Luke share a look, mutually realizing that you've found a breakthrough.
You: Hey buddy, does your dad work in the mine? What's his name?
You: We're headed to the mine. Maybe we will see your dad there.
Boy: My dad's name is Mark. He's a really, really, good miner.
Boy: You wouldn't believe all the pretty rocks he's found, and he always says that they're worth lots of money.
Boy: But dad hasn't been home for days for some reason.
Boy: I like my dad more than the pretty rocks...
Mark is his dad!?
You freeze in place, unable to form the right words.
Luke gently pats your shoulder and then carries on the conversation for you.
Luke: Your dad must be very busy all the time, right?
Boy: Yes. Dad is always very busy...
Boy: He has to work late in the mines every day, and sometimes, he doesn't come home for a few days in a row.
Boy: But, it's my birthday today... Dad said he'll come home to spend time with me... So why is he not here yet...
Luke: Do you know how to get to your dad's mine?
Boy: Yeah. Through that path back there!
Boy: It leads to the back door of the mining area.
Boy: But dad tells me not to go there... So I have to wait for him here.
You: (There's a path! I wouldn't have noticed that in a million years if he didn't tell us.)
You: (Thank goodness we asked, otherwise we'd be stuck walking in circles forever.)
Boy: *Sob* Daddy...
You: Don't worry. We'll help you find out where your father is when we get to the mines later.
Boy: Really? Miss, you wouldn't lie to me, would you?
You: Of course not. I promise.
Luke: Don't worry. You have my word. Once I see your father, I'll tell him to come home as soon as possible.
Boy: Okay! You're both such nice people! I'll wait here for my Daddy to come home.
The little boy smiles innocently. There's nothing but hope and anticipation written on his face.
Your heart remains heavy even as you walk down the path and the little boy disappeared from sight.
You: Luke, we must make sure to find Mark.
Luke holds your hand in his. The warmth gradually spreads from his palm onto yours.
Luke: Of course. We will find him.
You subconsciously grip onto Luke's hand like a lifeline, as if it can calm you down.
