The doctor needs your help. Go find him.

You: Dr. Miller, you were looking for me?

Dr. Miller: Yes, there are a few things I need you to check.

You: Eh?

Dr. Miller pauses for a moment before explaining.

Dr. Miller: In analyzing the data previously obtained, I realized that light also had some effect...

Dr. Miller: Although the shadows usually appear at night, there are also anomalies during the day.

You nod, recalling the strange thing that happened in the dining carriage.

Dr. Miller: So I wanted to do a comparison experiment to observe the effects of light.

Dr. Miller: Early this morning, I placed some Bakerlon crystals in the utility room.

Dr. Miller: I checked and recorded them at noon, afternoon, and dusk...

Dr. Miller: But the data is very complicated, which will require some time to analyze. I'll have to trouble you to check on it at night.

You: No problem. Leave it to me.

Check out the storage room.

Vyn: [Player]? What are you doing here so late at night?

You: Dr. Miller was looking for me...

You spend a few minutes explaining the situation to Vyn...

Vyn: I see.

You: Speaking of which, what are you doing here, Dr. Richter?

Vyn: A crew member informed me that a passenger was getting agitated...

Vyn: The conductor heard that I am a psychiatrist and asked me for assistance. I just finished with that passenger's psychological consultation.

You: How's the passenger doing?

Vyn: Good. The emotional changes originate from the long train ride and strange phenomena.

Vyn: He will be much better after he rests and stays away from the current environment.

You: I'm glad to hear that.

Vyn pauses for a moment and turns the topic to you again.

Vyn: So... are you on your way to check the situation in the utility room?

You: Yeah.

Vyn: Allow me to accompany you. The conversation with the passenger has left me wide awake.

You: All right.

Another shadow has appeared in the storage room. Check it out.

Reaching the utility room, a shadow floating in a corner immediately catches your attention.

You: Dr. Richter! There's a shadow here... It's the first time I've seen it here.

???: Booru babi... Tooruda...

You: Eh? It's speaking... but in an entirely different manner than the other shadows.

You: It can even be described as completely unintelligible...

Vyn: I believe it's trying to search for its younger sister.

You: You can understand it?

In the face of your surprise, Vyn simply adjusts his glasses.

Vyn: Although the language it speaks is not native to Bakerlon, it is one of the common languages on the continent.

Vyn: I came across it while reading some literature and found it fascinating, so I learned about it briefly.

You: (Despite what he says, this level of understanding is still remarkable...)

Just then, the shadow speaks again.

???: Booru babi... biru... *Sobs*

You: I wonder what it's saying now...

Vyn: It sounds like... the younger sister was swallowed by a wild beast.

You: What!?

Vyn: If I understand correctly, it is saying "Don't bite my sister" and "Let her go"...

You: Well...

You are about to say, "Can we help it?" But your words falter as soon as they reach your throat...

The shadow in front of you is clearly not a real "person."

Even if you wanted to help it... There is no way to do so.

Vyn: ...

Vyn doesn't say anything, gently you on the shoulder instead.

You can see the same emotion brewing in his eyes.

You: ...

You look at the small shadow floating slowly in the air, filling your heart with sadness.

It takes a few minutes for your emotions to calm down.

Vyn: Are you feeling better now?

You: Yes...

You: Let's go, Dr. Richter. We have more important matters to attend to.

Vyn nods. The two of you head inside the utility room and look around...

Staff Storage: Nocturnal Shadows (4)

Investigate the situation in the storage room with Vyn.

You: Basically, other than the shadow in the utility room... there doesn't seem to be anything special.

Vyn: We should take a closer look in case we missed something.

You: Yeah.

You and Vyn spend another half an hour taking detailed notes of the situation in the utility room.

You: Dr. Miller put the small crystal inside the cabinet, so no one could see it.

Vyn: Perhaps it is also part of Dr. Miller's strategy, to not make his experiments too obvious.

You: Yeah, people come here from time to time...

Vyn: Will you be returning to the exhibition?

You: Yeah, I need to talk to the doctor.

Vyn: I shall head back first then. I need to record the passenger's inquiry and give it to the conductor.

You: Thanks, Dr. Richter.

Exhibition Room: Nocturnal Shadows (5)

Tell the doctor everything that happened in the storage room.

You: Dr. Miller!

Dr. Miller: Miss [Player], you're back. How did it go?

You: Well, it's like this...

After hearing your explanation, Dr. Miller frowns, deep in thought.

Dr. Miller: Hmm... It seems the comparative experiment yielded results, but it wasn't what I expected...

Before you can ask any more questions, Dr. Miller looks back up at you.

Dr. Miller: After my preliminary assessment, light does affect the anomalies, causing them to display different characteristics.

You: Eh?

Dr. Miller: You see, generally speaking, the shadows on the train are not all the same.

Dr. Miller: Most say something clearly that we can understand... There's just no word order or reason.

Dr. Miller: But now there are shadows speaking in a different language.

Dr. Miller: And that happens to coincide with my comparison experiments on light conditions...

You nod thoughtfully as Dr. Miller explains.

You: That seems to be the case.

At this point, Dr. Miller seems lost in his own analysis, muttering to himself.

Dr. Miller: But to be more accurate... I still need to put data together for analysis.

Dr. Miller: Would it be different in other places? Hmm... I need to control the unity of variables...

Dr. Miller: Yes... I'll have to ask the crew members if there are other spare rooms similar to the utility room...

You: (The doctor is completely immersed in his own world...)

You: (I'll ask him about it tomorrow.)
