Luke

Luke: ...

You: What's up?

Luke: Isn't this painting... kinda weird?

You: Weird?

Luke: Yeah. Look at it: the wings, the weird skull design, and what looks like two eyes in the background.

Luke: I feel like I've seen it before, but I can't remember where...

Luke: I only remember that it's some religious sect's symbol.

You: ???

Luke: If only we had someone who knew about religion or art.

Artem

Artem: ...

You: What's the matter, Mr. Wing?

Artem: Nothing. I just think this painting... seems familiar?

You: Familiar?

Artem: Yes. A demon's head and an angel's wings... It looks like religious imagery.

You: Do you remember from which religion?

Artem: Sorry, I can't remember right now.

You: No worries. It's not something that you'd normally pay attention to.

You: (However... If there was someone familiar with religion and art...)

You: (They'd be able to recognize it.)

Vyn

You: Dr. Richter, why are you staring at this painting?

Vyn: No reason, merely that I had discovered something interesting.

You: Something interesting?

Vyn: Carefully look here. Does this painting not seem odd?

You: ...

You: There are wings, skull, and eyes in the picture.

You: Why do they put these patterns together?

Vyn: ...

Vyn: These appear to be the symbols of a certain cult.

You: Dr. Richter, can you understand this picture?

Vyn: I wish I could. But unfortunately, I do not know this picture.

Vyn: The reason I came to such speculation is that...

Vyn: The combination of these bizarre patterns and the painting itself seems to be full of religious sentiments.

Vyn: But that is all I can tell.

You: Well... This painting is probably more than just a decoration.

Vyn: True. However...

Vyn: This could be related to a very obscure cult.

Vyn: To decipher its symbolism and reason for being here, we may need an expert who can truely read the painting.

Marius

Marius: Hold up!

You: What's wrong?

Marius: This is... Rebirthism?

You: Rebirthism? What's that?

Marius: Look at this painting.

Marius points to the painting on the wall.

Marius: Don't you find it strange?

You: Now that you mention it...

You: The painting has wings, a weird skull, and... eyes?

You: Why this particular combination of things?

Marius: Because they're icons in Rebirthism.

Marius: Rebirthism was a popular cult among certain groups of people in the last century.

Marius: They believe that people are born with sin.

Marius: But at the same time, everyone has the chance to cleanse their sins.

Marius: Skulls symbolize evil, wings symbolize possibility, and eyes are the gaze of God.

You: Wow... You know this really well.

Marius: I heard from my lecturer in the arts and religion course at school.

Marius: Although Rebirthism is not a common religion, many of its believers are artists and master painters.

Marius: Influenced by the doctrines and customs of the cult, they created quite a lot of masterpieces.

Marius: Like the famous Seven Days Worship collection, it is about the processes of a religious ritual.

Marius: This one is the third painting of the Seven Days Worship series, with very similar contents and techniques.

You: I've seen the Seven Days Worship on the internet, but the painting look kind of distorted...

Marius: In art, distortion and madness are sometimes regarded as a kind of beauty.

Marius: Although the beauty of madness in Rebirthism paintings is a very uncommon type of aesthetic...

Marius: Not just you, many people who study art find it difficult to accept.

Marius: So there are indeed very few people who understand Rebirthism and their paintings.

You: But if the painting is here, it means...

Marius: There might have been people in this manor who believed in Rebirthology.

You: ...

Marius: Hold on. There's something else here.

Again, Marius examines the paintings carefully. On the back of the frame, he finds something unexpected.

Marius: It's a purple gemstone fragment, which should belong to the Erin's Winter.

Luke

You: Luke, look. This sculpture is gorgeous.

Luke: Yeah, and the details are skillfully done, so...

You: So?

Luke: This must be the work of a great master.

Luke: I can't discern more details about it or its creator, though. Sorry.

You: No problem. It's already impressive enough that you could make out that much.

You: Only someone experienced with art or sculptures would be able to get more information from such a short glance.

Artem

You: Hm? A sculpture, here?

You: It's lovely...

You: You can see how elegant it is even through a layer of dust.

Artem: This must be a master artist's work.

You: Mr. Wing, do you know who sculpted this?

Artem: No. I'm only judging by the material and precise handwork.

Artem: This isn't my area of expertise, so that's all I can say.

Artem: If I were someone who knew about sculpting or art...

Artem: Then I should be easily able to identify the creator.

You: Mr. Wing, you're too modest. The amount you know is already quite impressive.

Artem: Thank you.

Vyn

You: This sculpture is so beautiful...

Vyn: Do you like it?

You: Yeah. Look at it, Dr. Richter. Even though it's dusty, it still looks so exquisite...

You: It must be very expensive...

Vyn: Indeed, from the material and precision of the craftsmanship, it is probably the work of a master.

Vyn: But I am sorry I do not know... which master to be exact.

You: It doesn't matter, Dr. Richter. I was just making a comment.

You: To identify precisely whose work this is, in such a short time...

You: I'm afraid only an art expert would be able to do that...

Marius

You: What a beautiful sculpture...

Marius: Isn't this a work of Railas'?

You: Railas? The famous painter? Did he also make sculptures?

Marius: Of course. Although Railas is mostly known as a painter...

Marius: His sculptures are just as highly valued as his paintings.

Marius: But due to his sculptures being relatively rare, they are all very expensive.

Marius keeps circling around the sculpture before he stops and squats down behind it.

Marius: A statue of this size... Without certain networks and connections, it's probably something very hard to get.

You: If that's the case, then wouldn't that mean the owner of this manor is...

Marius: Yeah. He's very wealthy, with good connections.

You: ...Really...?

Marius: Okay, let's put that aside for now, Miss.

Marius: I also found something else.

You: What is it?

Marius: Look.

Marius extends his right hand. In his palm lies a purple gemstone fragment.

You: It's a shard of Erin's Winter!

Marius: Yup!

Luke: Hold on, lemme open it...

Luke opens the box and takes out something that looks like a notebook. Luke: It looks like a list, but parts of it are destroyed.

You: What's written on it?

Luke: There's writing, but these records seem to be encrypted.

Luke: They're recorded in some sorts of... religious symbols.

Luke: We can't decipher this if we don't know the specific meanings of the symbols.

You: Can you tell which religion they're from?

Luke: They look familiar, but I don't know why...

Luke: If only we could check online or ask a religion or art expert.

Artem

You: ...

You open the box.

Artem: What is it?

You: There's a list inside, but the writing is a bit odd.

You: I don't know if it's just my imagination, but I think this record uses images instead of writing.

Artem: It must be some method of encryption. These pictures resemble a skull and feathers...

Artem: This sort of imagery is common in religious encryptions.

Artem: Maybe this notebook has something to do with a religion?

You: (It would be nice to have someone who knows about religion or art right now.)

Vyn

Vyn: Wait a minute.

Vyn stops suddenly. He opens a box and takes out something.

You: What's wrong, Dr. Richter?

Vyn: There is a list of names... in the box.

You: Yeah... But part of this list seems to have been destroyed...

You: ...

Vyn: What are your thoughts?

You: Dr. Richter, do you find the writings on it... a little strange?

Vyn: These words seem to be recorded by visual encryption. But as for the details...

Vyn: I apologize. This encryption method is not very common.

Vyn: Perhaps we require the opinion of an art expert to decipher the patterns and understand its message.

Vyn: Unfortunately, I am not able to do this.

You: It's fine. Let's take a picture for the record. Let's move on.

Vyn: Sure.

Marius

You: Marius, wait.

You open the box in front of you and take something out.

Marius: A list... But part of it has been destroyed.

Marius: Hold on. Let me see what's written on it?

You: What's wrong?

Marius: Look at the shapes of these words. Do you find them strange?

You: Well... they look like a combination of skulls and feathers...

You: Are these words encrypted?

Marius: Yeah. It's a special encryption method used by the cult of Rebirthism.

You: Can you understand their encryption?

Marius: Well, I've seen this in a painting which was shown in class before.

Marius: Rebirthism is an obscure cult. Although there're very few written records about them...

Marius: But because many of their believers are artists and painters, they have a large collection of artworks.

Marius: In the second painting of the Seven Days Worship depicting Rebirthism's rituals...

Marius: It portrays the process of how this encryption method was invented.

Marius: And the method of decoding this encryption is also hidden in the painting itself.

You: You mean... you can understand the messages on it?

Marius: Of course. I was very curious so I studied all the paintings of the Severn Days Worship.

Marius: Let me see...

Marius takes the list and starts reading it page by page.

Marius: ...This list is a record of the believers' tributes.

You: "Tribute?" What is that?

Marius: It's a donation the believers give to the church.

Marius: Rebirthologists believe that people are born with sins and it's possible to cleanse their sins.

Marius: The reason unfortunate events happen is because of your sins.

Marius: And to stay out of misfortunes, believers must cleanse their sins.

Marius: But it's not enough to cleanse your sins yourself. You need a Prophet.

Marius: And that's the Abbot of Rebirthism. He claims to be the son of God and capable of communicating with God.

Marius: As long as the believers continue to pay their tributes, they would receive prophesies.

Marius: And by following the prophesies they can wash away their sins.

Marius: How fast the prophesies work is related to how much tribute one pays. The more you pay, the faster it works.

You: Isn't that how pyramid schemes work nowadays?

Marius: Exactly, but when Rebirthism was popular, science was not universally accepted...

You: So how much did the people on this list pay?

Marius: Let me see...

Marius: Some contributed their houses, some contributed gold... The tributes are all enormous sums.

You: Unbelievable...

Marius: Looks like this manor was a place where Rebirthism believers gathered.

You: ...

Marius: Oh, right, there's something else on the list.

Marius hands you something.

You: It's a shard of Erin's Winter.

Marius: Yes.

Artem: It's a... notebook?

You: I'll go find a ladder. One moment.

Artem: No need. Allow me.

Artem approaches the bookcase with a few steps and pulls out the notebook.

Artem: It's just an ordinary notebook, but there are some news clippings pasted inside.

Artem: They all seem to be reporting about treatments for a certain disease.

Artem: As for the reports' contents... We should consult a medical professional.

Vyn

You: Dr. Richter, do you see that between the two books?

Vyn: Sure, I have retrieved it. It is a notebook, with many news clippings pasted onto its pages.

You: News clippings? What are they about?

Vyn: Without exception, all these articles are related to treatment methods for mental illness.

Vyn flips through the notebook and asks you to look at the contents.

On the last page of the notebook, on the news article, there is a number "No.0012."

Vyn: In addition, annotations are written in the margins of each report. "Used," "Not used," "Not effective," and the like.

You: "Used," "Not used"... Did someone perform these treatments after reading these articles?

You: And who was collecting these information?

Vyn: ...

Vyn smiles but does not answer you.

Vyn: Okay. Let us leave this complicated question behind for now. I have something to show you.

Vyn gently holds out your hand and puts something on your palm.

Artem: These... are love letters.

Artem: Look at this one. It's addressed "To my dear Erin," from "Winter."

Artem: In this other letter, the receiver's and sender's names are swapped.

Artem: As for their contents... Mainly secrets and other private discussion.

Artem: This letter mentions that Winter was the son of the manor's butler.

Artem: He and Erin were childhood friends and grew up together.

Artem: But for some reason...

Artem: They couldn't make their feelings public, so they had to secretly write letters to each other.

Artem: As for this drawing... The writing here says that it was a gift from Erin to Winter.

Artem: The inscription in the corner says, "My love and I — Winter and Erin."

You: They were in love?

Artem: I think so, but here's something worth noting: in her letter, Erin said that she didn't have much time left.

Artem: There is more to their relationship than meets the eye.

While he's talking, Artem rummages through the box again.

Artem: !!!

You: What's the matter, Mr. Wing?

Artem: I found a red gemstone shard in the box.

You: Red gemstone shard...

You: Is it from the Erin's Winter?!

Artem: Most likely.

Vyn

You: Dr. Richter, there is a box under this bed.

Vyn: Please, allow me.

Vyn pulls out the box and opens it.

You: It seems that there are only some letters and a picture.

You: But I can't understand... some of the words in these letters...

Vyn: These words... seem to have been replaced with Akkadian.

You: Dr. Richter, can you understand it?

Vyn: Sorry. This language is very rarely used now. I am not familiar with it at all.

Vyn: I can only recognize the language itself.

You: But this language... feels familiar to me...

Vyn: The infamous Code of Hammurabi was written in this language.

You: Maybe we should find someone familiar with the Code.

Marius

You: Marius, there's a box under the bed.

Marius: Step back. I will get it.

Marius pulls out the box carefully and opens it.

Marius: These look like letters, and there's a painting.

Marius: The words are... In Akkadian?

Marius: That's too difficult...

You: Doesn't the Code of Hammurabi also uses this language?

Marius: Shall we find someone who understands the code?

Luke

Luke: What's this?

Luke approaches an object lying on the table.

Luke: It's a notebook that belongs to an Avril.

You: Isn't that the name we just saw on the doorplate?

Luke: Yes.

You: What did she write about?

Luke: Let me see...

Luke quickly flips through the notebook. As he does, his expression gradually changes.

You: What's wrong? Was something weird written down?

Luke: Nothing much. Just some family drama.

Luke: This would be enough content for dozens of TV drama episodes...

Artem

You: This is a... notebook?

You pick up something that is lying open on the table.

Artem: What is it?

You: I found a notebook that apparently belonged to a maid named Avril.

You: It says...

You quickly skim its pages. Artem stands next to you and follows along.

A short while later...

Artem: ...

You: ...

You: Haha... The people in this manor sure lived interesting lives.

Vyn

Vyn: This is...

Vyn walks towards the table and rummages through the stuff on it.

You: What's wrong, Dr. Richter? Did you find something?

Vyn: It is a notebook which belonged to a maid called Avril.

You: What's it about?

Vyn: Well... You should see for yourself.

Vyn hands you the notebook.

You flip through the notebook and become a bit... embarrassed.

You: HaHaha, the occupants of this manor and their relationships can be made into a prime-time drama.

Marius

You: There's something here?

Marius: It's a notebook. And it belongs to a maid, called Avril.

You: What did she write about...

Out of curiosity, you flick through the notebook. Marius is reading it next to you.

Gradually, the facial expressions of you and Marius's face become... funny.

You: Ha... Haha...

Marius: The relationships in the manor are surprisingly complicated.

Luke: It's huge... Why is there a picture in the center of it?

You: Strange... Wouldn't this photo ruin the shrine's aesthetic?

Luke: Maybe there's a special reason why?

Luke: This kind of shrine looks familiar. I feel like I've seen it somewhere...

Luke: It seems to be some sort of religious symbol...

Luke: If only we had someone who knows about religion or the picture on the shrine.

Artem

Artem: ...

You: What's the matter, Mr. Wing?

Artem: Nothing. I just find this altar somewhat strange.

You: True. And there's a picture in the middle...

Artem: Hmm... The design looks familiar, like a certain religion's ceremony.

You: Do you remember which religion?

Artem: Sorry, I can't think of it right now.

You: It's okay. After all, people don't usually pay attention to these things.

You: (But... If there is someone who is familiar with religion and art...)

You: (They should be able to recognize it.)

Vyn

You: Dr. Richter, look at this shrine...

Vyn: Do you think there is something strange about it?

You: Well, besides its strange shape which consists of eyes, skull, and wings...

You: Why put a photo in the middle of the shrine?

Vyn: Perhaps there is a special meaning behind it.

Vyn: This shrine seems to hold a lot of religious meaning. We should find someone who possesses this kind of knowledge...

Vyn: Or someone who can understand the images on the shrine.

Vyn: Maybe then your questions can be answered.

Marius

A shrine decorated with strange patterns is on the table.

And there's a photograph in the middle of the shrine.

You: Marius, do you know what this is?

Marius: This is a... wishing shrine of Rebirthism!

You: Wishing shrine? Are you sure?

Marius: I'm certain.

Marius: Although Rebirthism is a very uncommon cult that not many people know about...

Marius: But the picture on the shrine is quite well known in the art community.

Marius: Some smaller churches would paint their frescos by imitating this painting.

Marius: Even the images on stained glass windows.

You: Imitate this? But there're eyes, skulls, and wings on it...

You: They seem inappropriate for a church...

Marius: They don't copy the painting itself, what they copy is the composition.

Marius: The patterns you mention have great contrast in their shapes and colors.

Marius: So how to put them together subtly and express what the painter wants to say...

Marius: That is not an easy task.

Marius: But the artist had done a good job with the pictures on this shrine, especially in expressing the mysterious mood of Rebirthism.

You: Now that you mention it...

You: when I look at the shrine, I can imagine what Rebirthism is like.

Marius: Later on, a master artist was inspired by this painting when he saw it by accident.

Marius: He used a similar composition in painting the fresco of a church.

Marius: In the end, when the church was finished, the frescos became hugely popular.

Marius: As a result, this composition became popular as well.

Marius: Most people only know about the work of that master, but not many know about this Rebirthism shrine.

Marius: I also came to know about this by chance when I was studying at the Florence College of Art.

You: What does the shrine mean then?

Marius: According to the doctrine of Rebirthism, if there's something the believers want from God...

Marius: First of all, they need to donate money to the abbot to show their sincerity, which is the tribute.

Marius: Secondly, they need to worship this statue at home for 21 days and wait for the coming of God.

You: And this photo was placed on the statue because...

Marius: Look. There's a message behind the photo.

Marius: "I implore the almighty powers of the heavens to wash away my daughter's sins and to awaken her from her madness."

Marius: "Lassiter Modero."

You: ...Mr. Modero was a believer of Rebirthism, and it was him who worshiped this statue for his daughter?

Marius: Yes. And judging from the size of this statue, Mr. Modero's tribute was not small.

Marius: So his status in Rebirthology must be quite respectable.

You: ...

Marius: Oh right. There's something else in the shrine.

Marius opens his fist happily.

Marius: I found this behind the picture. It is the missing gemstone of Erin's Winter.

Luke: But these symbols kinda look like religious ones...

Luke: Maybe it's a special way that a certain religion encrypts things?

You: (In that case, we should consult someone who knows about religion or art.)

Artem

You: (There's something underneath the rags on this bench... A parchment scroll?)

Artem: What is it?

You: I found a scroll, but the words on it are strange...

You: I don't know if it's just my imagination, but I think it uses images instead of writing.

Artem: It must be some method of encryption. These pictures resemble a skull and feathers...

Artem: Maybe it's related to religion?

You: (It would be nice to have someone who understands religion or art right now.)

Vyn

Vyn: ...

Vyn opens the scroll under the rag on the bedside bench.

You: Dr. Richter, is there a problem with this scroll?

Vyn: The content of this scroll... seems to be encrypted with patterns.

You: Graphic encryption?

Vyn: Yes. And these graphics used in the encryption seem to hold a lot of religious meaning.

Vyn: Although I would like to say "yes," I am sorry to say that I have not seen such an encryption method before.

Vyn: Perhaps... Someone with knowledge in religion or art would know how to decipher these codes.

Marius

There's a scroll under the rags on the bedroom bench.

Marius examines the scroll.

You: Did you find anything?

Marius: Before I answer that, take a look at this picture, Miss Attorney. See anything unusual?

You: ...

You: The shapes of the texts look like a combination of skulls and feathers.

You: Is it encrypted?

Marius: Not bad, Miss Attorney. You're right. This type of encryption...

Marius: It's the same encryption method as in the second painting of the Seven Days Worship collection.

Marius: If I've not mistaken, this is indeed the unique encryption method used in Rebirthism.

Marius: On one hand, it's to prevent information leaks and government sanctions, and also to show Abbot's divinity...

Marius: They use a combination of their signature skull and feather patterns to represent different words.

Marius: And to convey the message in this way.

You: On the scroll, it reads...

Marius: "Your appeal has been noted by God."

Marius: "In a few days, Grady, God's messenger, will arrive and cleanse Erin Modero's sins."

Marius: ...

You: Is this a medical record?

Vyn: Yes. The attending physician is called Grady, and the patient is Erin Modero.

You: Mr. Modero's daughter? What was her illness?

Vyn: Her symptoms seem to match those of mania.

You: Was Miss Modero cured?

Vyn: Not only was she not cured, but according to this medical record, her condition got worse and worse.

Vyn: Initially, Miss Modero was still able to maintain some amount of lucidity each day.

Vyn: But towards the end, she was completely unable to maintain her sanity. She was confined inside the house.

You: Really... That's too bad...

You: But judging from the age of the manor, conditions like mania back then... were almost incurable.

Vyn: Indeed. But I believe Erin's condition only deteriorated so much because of the practitioner.

Vyn: Grady was not a doctor at all.

You: Dr. Richter, how do you know that?

Vyn: This medical record seems at first glance to be written by a doctor, but the descriptions of her symptoms are confusing and inaccurate.

Vyn: In terms of treatment, he was blindly testing all kinds of famous physical therapies on Erin.

Vyn: His unscientific methods caused Erin's condition to worsen instead of improve, and further damaged her health.

Vyn: If he had not made so many incorrect methods, judging from Erin's symptoms in the early stages...

Vyn: If she had received the right treatment, her condition could never have deteriorated so much.

You: So in the end, Miss Modero...

Artem: ...

Artem reads through the diary and seems lost in thought for a time.

You: Did you discover anything?

Artem: This is actually Erin's diary. The reason why she wrote in Akkadian...

Artem: Is because she didn't want her father to find out that she was in a relationship with Winter, the butler's son.

Artem: According to Skadi's local laws back then, parents had absolute authority over their children's marriages.

Artem: And Erin's father... severely looked down on Winter.

Artem: To protect each other, Erin and Winter used Akkadian, a language that only the two of them could understand.

You: I see...

Artem: Mm. And since Winter's dream was to become a judge...

Artem: Erin studied and researched various legal texts with him.

Artem: She also copied some excerpts to her diary and quoted texts from classic works.

Artem: She then added her own annotations and comments in the margins.

Artem: Like this sentence. It's from the Code of Hammurabi.

Artem: And this one is an article from the Corpus Juris Civilis.

Artem: It seems as though... she viewed these exercises as a means to pursue freedom.

You: ???

Artem: Here, she wrote, "I can neither leave this manor nor escape my fetters, but..."

Artem: "When I am studying these things, my soul is free."

Artem: "I can use them to picture the outside world I have never seen."

Artem: However...

You: ???

Artem: The first half seems normal, but the second half... Erin's handwriting becomes messier and her words more disorganized.

Artem: There are also many sketches that don't make sense.

Artem: Her condition is reminiscent of some mental disorder patients whom I've met before.

You: You mean that Erin might have had a mental illness?

Artem: It's just a possibility. I can't be sure.

Vyn: Do you remember the strange marks we saw on the wall outside of Erin's bedroom window?

You: You mean those marks were left by this rope?

You: But why is there traces of this rope there?

Vyn: Perhaps they tried to emulate Rapunzel.

You: ???

Vyn: In the fairy tale, Rapunzel lets down her long hair and pulls the prince up the tower.

Vyn: In reality, the window of Erin's bedroom leads to the garden of the manor, so maybe...

Vyn: This time, the prince hangs a rope from the window to help Rapunzel get some temporary freedom.

Marius

Marius: Oh?

You: What's wrong?

Marius: There's a rope on the floor.

You: ???

You squat down and examine the rope.

Marius: Do you remember the strange marks on the wall that we saw outside of Erin's bedroom window?

Marius: I think they were made by this rope.

You: But why are there marks here?

Marius: Miss Attorney, have you heard the story of "Rapunzel" before?

Marius: The imprisoned princess Rapunzel lowers her long hair to pull the prince up the tower.

Marius: And in this manor...

Marius: Maybe it's the opposite.

Marius: The prince hangs a rope by the window to help the girl achieve temporary freedom.

Luke: More specifically, part of a medical record.

Luke: This part only describes a certain stage of an illness.

Luke: The previous parts are missing.

You: Then, what does this part say?

Luke: I don't know... I can't make heads or tails out of the scribbled writing.

You: Maybe... we should consult a doctor.

Artem

You: Mr. Wing, look under this bed. Isn't that a medical record?

Artem: It is, but...

Artem: Some pages are missing from this record, and the description of the illness seems... unprofessional.

You: Is it hard to understand because we aren't medical professionals?

Artem: ...Maybe.

Vyn

You: Dr. Richter, look what's under the bed.

You: Is this a medical record?

Vyn: Yes, but this medical record is incomplete. Some parts in the front are missing.

You: What's in this medical record?

Vyn: "The mental state of the patient, Erin Modero, has become completely unstable..."

Vyn: "...surgical lobotomy, or ice pick lobotomy which is more efficient, is recommended."

Vyn: ...

You: Dr. Richter...

Vyn: It's fine. Let's see if there are any other clues around.

You: Yeah.

You and Vyn go through all the objects and traces around the hospital bed again. Unfortunately...

Except for the green gemstone fragment in the corner...

You can't found any more records about Erin's treatment.

Marius

Before you can finish, Marius has already picked up the files under the bed.

Marius: The patient was Erin Modero, as for the symptoms and conclusion...

Marius: No. I can't tell for sure. The record is very confusing.

Artem

You: Mr. Wing, look inside this cabinet.

You: There are some weirdly shaped tools...

Artem: They seem to be instruments used for some kind of surgery. I've seen them before in files.

You: Some kind of surgery?

Artem: Ahem... Sorry, I can't recall the exact name of the surgery.

You: No problem. I was just curious.

You: (...Let's ask a medical professional later.)

Vyn

There are some strange-looking tools in the locker.

You: What are these for?

Vyn: Don't touch them.

As you were about to get closer to observe the tools, Vyn suddenly speaks.

You: Dr. Richter!?

Vyn: Sorry if I scared you. But you should not touch those tools.

You: Why? Is there something unusual about them?

Vyn: These tools are used to perform surgical lobotomy and ice pick lobotomy.

You: ???

Vyn: Both of those procedures were used in the treatment of mental illness.

You: But the shape of these tools... This one, for example, is so sharp and narrow. Wouldn't it hurt the brain?

Vyn: ...

Vyn goes into silence for a while.

Vyn: ...Regarding surgical lobotomy and ice pick lobotomy, especially the latter...

Vyn: Their rationale... is to make incisions to the nerve tissues in the brain.

Vyn: For example, in an ice pick lobotomy, first, they anesthetize the patient with an electric shock.

Vyn: Then the doctor would drive the ice pick-shaped tool into the base of the eye socket through the area above the eyeball.

Vyn: By continuously hitting the back of the pick with a mallet, they sever the connective tissues to the prefrontal cortex and achieve their intended effects.

You: But this method is simply...

Vyn: Yes, it is horrible. Correct, it is the direct physical mutilation of the patient's brain.

Vyn: Many of the patients suffered serious complications and permanent impairments, thus becoming walking corpses.

You: ...Does this mean that someone in this manor had or was about to have such a procedure?

Vyn: ...Yes.

You: ...

Somehow Vyn's explanations make you uncomfortable and sad.

Vyn: [Player], look into the cupboard. There is something inside.

Perhaps because he's trying to distract you, Vyn quickly speaks up.

He points to the end of the locker, where you can vaguely see something shining.

Vyn reaches towards the shining object.

Vyn: Looks like we are lucky...

Vyn: It's a gemstone fragment of Erin's Winter.

Marius: The picture of this puzzle looks like...

Marius: The fifth painting of the Seven Days Worship series.

Marius: I still remember what it's like. It won't take long for me to assemble it.

As Marius speaks, he begins to put the pieces together. Before long, he has completed the puzzle.

As he finishes his final touch, he takes out a piece of paper from his pocket and makes a sketch of the image.

You: Why are you copying the picture of the puzzle?

Marius: The Seven Days Worship is one of the few remaining paintings from Rebirthism...

Marius: Other than depicting the processes of their rituals, it also records the encryption method of the cult.

Marius: They often use this encryption method to deliver messages, so I want to copy this down for \n further reference...

Marius: To see whether there are any hidden messages in this puzzle.

You: Did you find anything?

Marius: "just focus on finding a way of delivering Modero's property and wealth to the son of God."

Luke: It's a colloidal precipitate formed from the oxidation of gasoline at high temperatures.

Luke studies the substance in front of him for a while, and then quietly speaks.

Luke: But... Why's there a gasoline barrel here? And why is it still sealed?

You: Maybe something in the manor ran on gasoline, and this was a reserve.

Luke: No, I specifically looked out for that. All the fireplaces and kitchen stoves in this manor use wood as fuel.

Luke: Most of the light sources are candlesticks or electric lamps, so there's no need for gasoline.

You: We can use them to look at ourselves?

Luke: So what if someone didn't want to look at themselves?

You: That's why they broke the mirror?

Luke: Yes. I'm guessing that this person had some reason to not want to look at themselves, particularly their face.

Luke: Do you remember the bloodstained pieces of wood we found on the first floor?

You: You suspected that someone had a fight there, didn't you?

Luke: Yes. Factoring in this mirror...

Luke: Maybe the person's face was injured in a fight?

Artem

You: The mirror on the wall is broken.

Artem: ...

Artem: Perhaps a previous visitor accidentally broke it.

You: Really...?

You: (Something feels off, like we're missing something.)

You: (Maybe I should consult someone good at evaluating crime scenes and clues, like a detective?)

Vyn

You: Dr. Richter, look. The mirror on the wall is broken.

Vyn: Perhaps a previous explorer had damaged it by accident.

You: Really...?

You: (Something still feels off. I think we're missing something.)

You: (It'd be nice to have a detective here right now. They're more perceptive about this kind of thing.)

Marius

You: The mirror hanging on the wall is broken...

Marius: The manor has existed for a long time. It's not surprising that a mirror is broken.

You: ...

You: (Hold on. I feel like something is missing.)

You: (It'd be nice to have a detective here now. They'd more sensitive to this kind of thing.)

Luke

You: Is this thing drawn on the ground a magic circle?

Luke: Yeah, but I've never seen one like this.

Luke: Maybe someone familiar with religion and art would know about it.

Artem

Artem: On the floor...

You: It's a magic circle!

You: Its shape looks a bit weird...

You: Mr. Wing, have you seen this before?

Artem: No.

Artem: Maybe we can consult someone who knows about religion and art.

Vyn

You: Dr. Richter, on the floor...

Vyn: It is a magic circle.

Vyn: However, its shape appears quite unusual.

Vyn: Perhaps someone with an understanding of religion and art would be able to identify its significance.

Marius

You: Marius, look. What's that on the floor!

You: Is this a magic circle?

Marius: This is the Blood Circle of Summoning.

You: ???

Marius: Rebirthism priests draw this circle before they perform a ritual to wash away their believers' sins.

Marius: They believe that with this circle, they can summon God from heaven into the mortal realm to improve the effect of cleansing.

Marius: Next to the circle, they would write down the name of the sinner who is to be cleansed.

Marius: So who this circle was for...

Marius walks towards the edge of the array, where there's some vague wording.

But you have no problem recognizing it as you've seen this name in the manor many times.

"Erin Modero."

Marius: So it was for her...

You: But from the traces of this circle, it looks like it's not complete...

Marius: Exactly, they usually draw the Blood Circle of Summoning on the day of the cleansing...

Marius: I'm afraid something had happened on the day of Summoning and Cleansing.

Luke

Luke: The walls here have a lot of scratch marks and dried blood on them...

Luke: It looks like they were caused by a struggle or self-harm.

You: Luke, look! Is this blood meant to be writing?

Luke: It looks like it, but the words are...

Luke: It's Akkadian. I can't read it.

You: We'll need to find someone who knows Akkadian.

Artem

You: Mr. Wing, look at the wall!

You: Starting from this corner, there's a trail of dried blood and scratch marks.

Artem: They seem to be the result of a struggle or self-harm.

Artem squats down in the corner and carefully inspects the wall, one trace at a time.

Artem: !!!

Artem: This bloodstain looks like words.

You: "Words"?

Artem: Yes. They're written in Akkadian, so most people wouldn't recognize it.

You: What does it say?

Artem: These words mean...

Artem: "Live on. I will always love you."

Vyn

You: These marks... Are they dried bloodstains and scratches?

Vyn: They look to be markings left behind by someone in this corner who had suffered a struggle or self-harm.

Vyn: But... Look here.

Vyn points to some bloodstains.

Vyn: Here, it seems that blood was used to write something on the wall. The words are in... Akkadian.

You: (Looks like we'll need to find someone proficient in Akkadian to solve this mystery.)

Marius

Marius: Are these dried blood stains and scratch marks on the wall?

You: It looks like it's caused by a struggle or self-mutilation.

Marius: This mark below... looks like a sentence.

You: !!!

Marius: This sentence... Is it in Akkadian again?

Marius: We should get a professional to look at this...

Luke

Luke: There are some medical reports here.

You: Medical reports?

Luke: Well, to be precise, they're reports about medical experiments.

Luke: The patients in these reports had all undergone the same surgery. Someone was closely monitoring their statuses after surgery.

You: What kind of surgery?

Luke: Don't know... I can't understand what the report says about the surgery.

You: It's okay. We aren't doctors, so it's not like we're expected to understand this stuff.

You: (We'll need a doctor to solve this mystery.)

Artem

You: Mr. Wing, look at what's inside this cabinet. Are these medical records?

Artem: They seem to be medical experiment reports. These people had all undergone the same procedure, but...

Artem: The descriptions of the surgery seem strange.

You: Is it hard to understand because we aren't medical professionals?

Artem: We can't rule out that possibility.

Vyn

You: Dr. Richter, I found this in the cabinet.

You hand the documents to Vyn. He quickly looks through them.

You: So, Dr. Richter? Make any discoveries?

Vyn: These documents are medical experiment reports. Most of the patients discussed herein suffered from mental illnesses.

Vyn: Doctors had performed surgical or icepick lobotomies on them and then closely monitored their post-surgical conditions.

Vyn: They wanted to discern whether these two interventions were effective modes of treatment.

You: ...What were the patients' conditions like after surgery?

Vyn: Very poor. Most of them suffered complications and sequelae.

Marius

You: Marius, I found something in the cabinet.

Marius: What did you find?

The minute you remove the files from the cabinet, Marius is already beside you.

You: These look like medical reports from experiments. Looks like these people had all undergone the same surgery.

You: But I can't read the medical reports...

Marius: Shall we consult a doctor? They should be able to tell.

You: Good idea!

Luke

You: Luke, look at all the letters here!

Luke: Let me see... The front of the envelope says...

Luke: "To Mr. Lassiter Modero"... Is he the owner of this manor?

You: Maybe. I remember seeing this last name on the front gate a little while ago.

Luke: Looking at the style of this manor, it's probably about a hundred years old...

Luke: The writing on these envelopes have faded over time.

Luke: We can't get anymore useful information at the moment.

You: No worries, we've only just started. A place this big definitely has a thing or two to discover.

Luke: You're right. Let's keep going.

Artem

You: Mr. Wing, look here.

Artem: Are these letters?

You: Yeah. It says "To Mr. Lassiter Modero"... Must be the name of the manor's owner.

You: But the rest of the words are faded...

Artem: This manor has likely been around for over a hundred years, so it isn't unexpected for any writing to have faded.

Artem: Let's keep going. We might discover something else.

You: Okay.

Vyn

You: Dr. Richter, wait. There are lots of envelopes here.

Vyn: They seem to be letters addressed to the owner of this manor. His name is written here.

You: "To Mr. Lassiter Modero"... The rest of the words are faded.

Vyn: Too much time has elapsed. Looking at the architectural style here...

Vyn: This manor was likely constructed over one hundred years ago.

You: Let's keep going. We might make more discoveries.

Vyn: All right.

Marius

You: So many envelopes...

Marius: Envelopes? Are they addressed to the owner of the manor? Is there anything written on the envelope?

You: Let me see... "to Mr. Lassiter Modero..."

You: Was he the owner of the manor?

Marius: I think so. Is there anything else written on it?

You: No. The words have gone blurry...

Marius: Well, judging from the architecture of this manor, it was probably built more than a hundred years ago...

Marius: The words on the letters have all gone blurry.

Marius: It's okay. Let's go inside.

Luke: "To my only daughter, Erin"...

You: So this Mr. Modero had a daughter.

Luke: This Erin really liked this book.

Luke: Look. The book's old, but you can see signs that the pages were frequently flipped.

You: Yeah... Some parts look like they were read many times.

Luke: ...

You: What's wrong?

Luke: Nothing. I just thought of a saying that I had heard before.

You: There's writing on the title page. "To my only daughter, Erin"...

You: So Mr. Modero didn't live here alone. He had a daughter?

Artem: Seems so.

Artem: ...

You: Mr. Wing, what's wrong?

Artem: The suspect of the assault case that Captain Morgan consulted us for was also fond of this book.

Artem: Do you remember what he said at that time?

You: "People who enjoy reading Alice in Wonderland are those who long for freedom yet are unable to attain it.

You: Mr. Wing, are you saying that that Miss Modero...

Artem: Perhaps... We should continue onward.

Artem: Obtaining more information will let us make better judgments.

Vyn

Vyn: This is...

You: What's wrong, Dr. Richter?

Vyn: Nothing. I just found a book left open. It is "Alice in Wonderland."

You: Does the title page say anything on who it belonged to?

Vyn: "To my only daughter, Erin." This book must have been a gift from Mr. Modero to his daughter.

You: Erin must've loved this book. You see that its pages are worn from being turned so often.

Vyn: ...

You: Dr. Richter, what's wrong?

Vyn: Have you ever heard what some people say about this book?

Vyn: "People who enjoy reading Alice in Wonderland are those who long for freedom yet are unable to attain it."

Vyn: Do you think this was also the case for this Erin?

Artem: Yes. People brave enough to fight against fate and the restrictions of their time deserve our respect.

Vyn

You: The engraver has written Winter and Erin's story on the tombstone.

You: Dr. Richter, who do you think caused Winter and Erin's tragedy?

Vyn: There were many factors. But I would prefer to call it a tragedy of time.

Vyn: Whether it was Lassiter's ignorance or the horrible treatments that Erin had to suffer through...

Vyn: They were indisputably some of the worst atrocities of those times.

You: If they'd not been born in that time, in those families... Would they've had a better ending?

Vyn: That was not necessarily a bad ending for them.

Vyn: We are not them, naturally, we cannot completely understand their mindset and how they felt.

You: But...

Vyn: Do not be upset. If you really want to do something for them...

Vyn: Follow the example of the engraver and everyone else who has ever held the Erin's Winter...

Vyn: Protect their story.

You: This is also a kind of protection he gave Erin and Winter.

Marius: Of course.

Marius: For artists, nothing can express their feelings better than their work.
