Summary

Marius and the main character meet with Lawrence in police custody; Lawrence admits being the sole culprit behind Lester Auction House's item-swapping scandal and downfall, and he admits he argued with Van on the night of his death, but Lawrence insists the argument was because Van wanted to take the fall for the scandal and Lawrence disagreed. Lawrence mentions that Van had received successful treatment for his depression and was no longer suicidal, and that he had asked his caretaker, Johnny Bailey, to dispose of the cyanide he'd kept in his desk drawer. Lawrence can only think of one other person impacted heavily enough by the scandal to kill its supposed perpetrator: Bob Davis, a factory owner who'd lost everything to gambling debts and committed arson to keep his family's assets out of creditors' hands.
