Irvin Soong is an elderly resident of Opaline Village who's said to be ill-tempered, smacking people with his walking stick when he's in a bad mood, but overall not a bad person. He has an estranged wife, son, and daughter, but he lives alone in a remote area of the village, and no one knows what he does from day to day. He has no contact information and does not use phones, and when he needs to travel to the city, he drives his tractor.

Much of the conflict between Irvin and his family centers around his son, who was a journalist, killed ten years ago while investigating a child-trafficking ring. The other members of the ring framed Irvin's son as one of them, leading the rest of the family and village to shun him while Irvin maintained his son's innocence.

Irvin is eccentric, said to come and go like a ghost, and his walking stick doubles as a folding stool, with which he can plant himself and dispense wisdom and gossip wherever he pleases. He's derisive of the city habit of calling people "mister and miss" and directs people to instead call him "Gramps." He likes to spend his spare time visiting friends in the city or watching TV, particularly detective shows.

{{Spoiler|text=<nowiki/>
Irvin kept several of the mutated Opaline Fish from the Opaline River pollution event. On the day of Jasmine Kenders' death, Jasmine had come to the village to retrieve these fish for testing, knowing they were the only evidence left of Heirson Health Products' involvement in the scandal. However, Irvin's house had been broken into and the fish stolen by Ian Johnson, leaving Irvin unable to receive Jasmine that day. Irvin was the person who discovered and reported Jasmine's accident, finding her car when he was en route to Stellis to give her the fish she hadn't been able to wait for.
