His history as a father, however, is less noble: after meeting [[Reina Richter]] on a trip to [[Barosk]] in 2002, the two fell in love at first sight. They decided to marry, and their son was born during the wedding plans. The [[Church of Svart]] intervened, refusing to allow the marriage unless Reina converted. She refused, and although Eirik tried to fight the church, he was unwilling to make political sacrifices, and Reina left him and her son, returning to her home city of [[Stellis]]. Eirik fell into a deep and decadent alcoholism, leaving his son to be raised by staff and cruel stepmothers, only recovering many years later with psychological help. He also tried and failed to fight the Church again when it attempted to prevent Vilhelm's study of psychology. More willing than his father to sacrifice political power, Vilhelm gave up his title and left the country, but Eirik still considers him his only heir and pleads for him to return home.<ref name="vyncardFfT" />
