Opaline Village

Opaline Village, located on the outskirts of Stellis City, was named because of its proximity to the Opaline River. In the recent years, ethnic tourism has become popular and villagers living there have opened their homes to tourists, providing them with additional income.[1]

Opaline Village specializes in Opaline fish, freshwater fish native to the Opaline River. They are considered a Stellis City delicacy.[2]

The village was recently victim to a water pollution scandal that caused severe underdevelopment and death in their prize fish, blame for which was the subject of much media attention and debate. The media initially blamed the scandal on a local paper mill, but some blamed the local research lab run by Heirson Health Products for causing it.[3] While the compensation from the pollution incident gave every household in the area $10,000 - $20,000, the destruction of the village's fishing industry made life extremely difficult for residents of the village. With the soil around the mountain ill-suited for farming, and with both the paper mill and Heirson lab shut down after the scandal, many of the village's younger residents left to seek work elsewhere, leaving the population of the village mostly children and elderly.[4]

Opaline residents have traditionally shied away from machinery, leaving most of their work done by strong men, so many families prefer boys over girls.[5]
