The day has finally come! Your secret preparations for Luke's birthday are finally complete!

You even decorated the attic in your parents' house for his birthday. It's a place filled with your and Luke's childhood memories.

As children, you two called it "221B Baker Street," the address of Luke's beloved Sherlock Holmes.

You feel that he'd be elated to celebrate his birthday here.

You: All right, time to call the birthday boy and invite him over.

You: Luke, are you busy?

Luke: No!

Luke blurts out his reply as if he has been waiting for you to ask him.

You: It's not a huge deal or anything, but I'm in a bit of trouble...

Luke: Trouble? Where are you now? I'll be right there.

You: Don't worry, it's nothing serious, but it'd be great if you could come over.

Luke: Of course I can!

You: I'll wait for you at "221B Baker Street."

Luke: "221B Baker Street"? I'll be there in 20, no, 10 minutes.

You: Luke sounds pretty anxious. Maybe you shouldn't...

A short while later, you hear the front door open. Luke's footsteps grow closer and closer.

You stealthily hide in a corner and ready your party popper, quietly listening to Luke's footsteps coming upstairs.

Luke: [Player], where are you?

With a pop, colorful confetti explodes above Luke, covering the two of you.

You: Happy birthday, Luke!

You shout loudly. Luke doesn't seem to have recovered from the surprise.

He looks at you, stunned. Tears seem to shine in his bright eyes.

Before you can take a closer look, he suddenly pulls you over and tightly holds you in an embrace.

You: Luke?

Luke: Don't talk. Just give me a moment.

You don't know how time has passed before Luke lets go of you. You see that familiar, cheery smile on his face again.

Luke: I thought you were avoiding me because you were mad, but it was for my birthday...? It really was...

You: "Really"? You already guessed that I was planning a surprise for your birthday, didn't you?

You: You saw through all of my planning. Then this was pointless...

Luke: No, no! I didn't know about this, I really didn't!

Luke: In the beginning, I thought you were knitting the gloves for me. I didn't think you were preparing anything else.

Luke: And whenever we talked on the phone, you always avoided me. I really thought I made you angry...

You: Haha, I never thought I'd see the day where I could keep a secret from the mighty Detective Pearce!

You: Okay, I'm done teasing. Come look at the birthday presents I got for you.

Luke: Oh, okay!

The gloves are the first present that Luke unwraps.

You: You taught me how to knit them, but I also put in a lot of effort. Please treasure them...

Luke nods excitedly as he holds the gloves. He's smiling so much that his eyes are squinted.

You: (It's only the first gift, and you're already this happy and smiling like an idiot.)

You: Why are you giggling at my gloves? Are you laughing at my craftsmanship?

Luke: Why would I? This is the best gift I've ever received.

You: This is the best? Then do you still want to see the other presents?

Luke: Of course. How can I disappoint you?

As he's talking, Luke reaches out to unwrap the other gifts.

Luke: What?! The first edition of Sherlock Holmes! So you were the one who bought it from Boss.

You: You also know the old man from the secondhand bookstore?

Luke: Yeah. His first love was a Sherlock Holmes fan, but she left Stellis for some reason.

Luke: Boss prepared this collection just for her, but he's waited 50 years without seeing her.

You: So when he said I was lucky, there was a double meaning.

Luke: Hm?

You: Because I not only found the books, but I was able to wait for the person they were meant for. Guess that makes me the luckier one?

You: ...

As soon as you say that, you feel that something is amiss. For some reason, Luke appears even more uneasy than you do.

Luke: ...

Luke: Ahem. Huh? Is that person on the cake supposed to be me?

Luke quickly changes the topic.

You: Yep. I didn't make that topper, but I sketched the design, so I claim partial credit.

Luke: [Player], thank you.

You: Of course you should thank me. You don't know how blood, sweat, and tears went into getting these gifts.

Luke looks around the attic with an astonished expression.

Luke: I wouldn't have noticed if you didn't mention it. Why'd you prepare so many gifts for me?

You: You have a lot of nerve. Who said he'd come back to celebrate his birthday together eight years ago?

You: In the end, you were unreachable after just arriving at the capital. Dad even had his old classmate ask about you at National Central University.

You: Later, we learned that you were in a secret experiment, so we finally had peace of mind.

You: I was stupidly expecting you to keep your promise and come back to celebrate your birthday together! I waited 'til dawn, but you never showed up.

Luke: What?! You waited for me until dawn?

You: Yeah. I woke up in the morning to find that I had slept in the attic overnight.

Luke: I'm sorry...

You: You don't have to apologize. It's not like you had a choice. Now that you're back, you have to make it up to me from now on.

Luke: Okay. I'll pay you back however you want.

You: Words alone are useless. Let's make a pinky promise like when we were kids. Whoever backs out will get punished.

Luke: Sure, whatever you say.

Your and Luke's pinkies gently lock together. The past intertwines with the present, as if you two had never parted.
