Kirstie is an inpatient mental illness patient under Vyn Richter's care. She was diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder when she was put on trial for the fatal stabbing of her boyfriend after her defense attorney, Artem Wing, presented evidence for the diagnosis. As a result, Kirstie was sent for indefinite mental care rather than prison. Three distinct personalities have shown themselves: an innocent and timid personality thought by many to be her "original self," a personality prone to violent outbursts identifying himself as "Kirstie's father," and a more sinister, murderous, and extremely possessive one identifying herself as "Kirstie's big sister."
The family history Kirstie recounts states that her mother took her big sister when she left the family when Kirstie was young and that her father was abusive. Her sister, independent and kind, would go out and see the world and visit Kirstie to tell her about it. Her sister also tried to get her away from her abusive father, but during their negotiations, an argument led to an accident that killed them both. However, Vyn notes she does not have and has never had a big sister, so it's unknown how much of each element of this history is true.
Vyn theorizes that Kirstie tampered with her father's car's self-driving AI, which led to his fatal drinking and driving accident. The trauma and guilt from this incident is likely to have been what fractured her personality. Furthermore, while Artem's defense of Kirstie blamed the murder of Kirstie's boyfriend on the "father" alter, the "big sister" alter eventually confessed to the crime and the fact that she's the main persona during the main character's visit.[2]
