Vernon Green, or "Grandpa Vern" as he is sometimes called, is the owner of Penny's Comfort Foods in Stellis City's Central Business District. The restaurant is converted from the first floor of his home and was founded in memory of Vernon's wife, Penny Green, who died in 2005, so that the recipes she recorded in the recipe book she left behind could be enjoyed by as many people as possible.[2] He maintains a plot of camellias outside the restaurant.[3]
In honor of his son, Peter Green, who died in a car accident in 2003 at age 18 and never got to attend his dream school of Stellis University, Vernon runs a grant program for underprivileged students to assist them in attending Stellis University and gaining financial independence. Some of his grantees include Winnie Cooper[4], whom he had hoped would take over the restaurant[5], and Pedro Brooks. Recently, he is in poor health due to a heart condition, for which he takes large amounts of Heirson's Effervescent Packets[6]. He has also recently been diagnosed with depression[7].
Vernon was the champion of the Stellis Angling Competition in 2029.[8]
