Artifact Discovery

You: Is this a necklace? But the shape of the pendant is a small bottle. It looks more like a container for something...

You: But the colorful gems studded on this bottle are so pretty!

Opening the cap and taking a closer look inside the bottle, the curator then takes out a professional tool he carries around to pick out a little gray residue from the bottle.

It looks like some kind of cream. After looking at it carefully and smelling it gently, he puts the small piece of cream back into the bottle.

Museum Curator: It's balm. That is an incense bottle which supposed to be hung on the body. It's an accessory for aristocratic women.

Museum Curator: There is a family crest on the bottom. It belongs to the family of the brother of Pharaoh Abbey in the Eighth Dynasty. I just wonder who she is.

Museum Curator: From the decoration on the bottle, it looks like a product influenced by another culture. This also confirms it.

Museum Curator: This Pharaoh valued trade and exchange with many of the neighboring countries. This encouraged cultural integration between the various countries.

Museum Curator: Not just women, people at that time were all fashionable to use a wide variety of fragrances, balms, incense pouches, and other accessories.

You: What are the fragrances in it?

Museum Curator: Sorry, I don't have much experience with fragrances... Perhaps, you can ask an expert in this field.

Museum Curator: Knowing the contents inside this bottle does offer some clues in determining exactly where it belongs.

You: Curator, the expert you are talking about is...

Museum Curator: Her name is Padilla, this is the address of her lab. But, this one is a little different from the typical research institute.

You: Different?

Museum Curator: Well, you'll know when you see it.

Head to Padilla's Lab like the curator suggested.

You: What a beautiful place! It is very different indeed...

When walking into her institute, you feel shocked. This place didn't have as many bookshelves or experimental equipment as you'd expected...

The blue sky shines bright outside the glass wall, and the butterflies are flying among the blooming flowers inside. It looks just like an exquisite garden.

Patila: Hi guys, is there anything special in my institute?

Padilla is dressed in the traditional clothing of ancient Khaimit. A real beauty with a youthful face.

After hearing the reason for our visit, the corners of her mouth lifts into a smile.

Patila: Well, I'm fine with helping you. However, I don't want to be acquainted with people who are clueless about fragrances.

She leads you deep into the room, to a table lined with rows of colorful and delicately made bottles with strange and unfamiliar scents.

Patila: If you can tell me what any of these five fragrances are made of, then I'll help you. How's that for a deal? Simple, right?

You: Uh...

Vyn: Very well. Let me have a try.

Vyn: There is no need to worry. I will be fine.

After responding to Padilla, Vyn approaches you to whisper in your ear before calmly approaching the fragrances.

Patila: Oh ho? Then let's begin

Vyn: The first one. It's lotus and wine.

Vyn picks up the bottle and sniffs it lightly. After a brief moment of thought, he gives his answer.

You: (Wow, Vyn's amazing!)

Patila: Correct.

Vyn: The second one, grapes, roses... hmm, a touch of pine as well.

In no time at all, Vyn identified all five fragrances and Padilla finally decides to help.

She takes the artifact into the room besides, then comes out a short while later, and hands you a note with a its components written down.

Patila: I wrote it all down here. You can take this back. I won't see you to the door.

After saying that, she leaves on her own.

You: (The note also smells good. Padilla... is really a distinctive scholar...)

Vyn: Let's head back now.

You can't help but admire his skill at identifying scents.

You: Never knew you were good at identifying scents!

Vyn: Not really. It is just a small interest of mine, so I learned a little.

Vyn: Those are very basic things. If it was as complex as the ancient artifact in question, then I would be completely lost.

Vyn: Remember? I scented all our clothes with medicinal incense to repel insects before. So maybe shec ame up with this question because she noticed.

You: So she's not trying to embarrass us for her own amusement?

Vyn: Maybe...but it does not matter. Let us hurry back, the curator is still waiting for our answer.

Go back to the museum in Rubis.

Museum Curator: You're back. Did Padilla give you a hard time?

Vyn: Not too bad.

Museum Curator: Hahaha, despite how she acts, she's actually really diligent. In terms of the quantity and quality of her academic papers, she is second to none.

You: Sure enough, yet another big shot...

The curator nods and lightly unfolds her note.

Museum Curator: This aroma...She never changes.

Museum Curator: Well, nightshade, calamus, pine wood, wine, passion flower... She said these were all that can be identified so far.

Museum Curator: "This balm can also be used to treat insomnia as it is believed to have a narcotic relaxing effect on the nerves."

Museum Curator: "Because the ingredients were extremely valuable in the past, it must be belong to a noblewomen from that time."

After reading Padilla's note, the curator lapses into thought.

Museum Curator: The eighth dynasty. The family crest... Only one woman was recorded suffering from insomnia - Abbie's sister-in-law, Toru.

Museum Curator: Not much was written about her, only her silent personality and how she suffered from insomnia and so on...

Museum Curator: I'll check it again later on. Thank you. You've been of much help.

You: Not at all. Glad that it got cleared up.
