Summary

With Van Kerrel's password broken, Marius reads the only document in the protected folder: a note from Van to Johnny Bailey forgiving him for murdering Van, who had collected all the works fraudulently sold to Bob Davis and left them in a warehouse for Johnny to collect and start over. Marius also obtains the travel records for Johnny's twin, Bobby Davis, who returned to Stellis in time to commit the crime, as well as the paternity test results showing Johnny is a 99% match to Bob and his wife. The main character also remembers the flower petal found in an earlier investigation and confirms via the Big Data Lab that it could only have come from the neighboring state that Johnny had supposedly been away visiting at the time of the crime.

As the pair puts these clues together, the room fills with smoke from a sudden fire, and they escape via the study room window onto the roof of the shed.

Van Kerrel's will, acquired by breaking the code on his computer. He forgives Johnny.

Van knew that Johnny wished vengeance upon him, but he hoped to turn Johnny back from going down this dark path.

Van bought the authentic pieces for the fake ones Bob ever bought and store them in a warehouse at Stellis Harbor. He wanted to give the paintings to Johnny once Johnny gave up on his revenge.

In his last will, Van states that if Johnny still decided to go through with his murder plan, he forgives Johnny and hopes that the judge could take this fact into consideration and show Johnny some mercy.
