Summary

Marius discovers that the "Dr. Jenkins" that Van Kerrel was in contact with specializes in paternity tests, and that Bob Davis had recently been one of his clients. The main character believes that Johnny Bailey may in fact be Bob Davis' son, giving him a motive to commit the murder since Bob's life was ruined by the art-swapping scandal. The pair hypothesizes that Johnny had planned to poison Van's rum, keeping an eye on things from the shed roof outside the study window, and that Johnny established his alibi by using twin brother Bobby Davis' identity to travel back to Stellis immediately after leaving.
