Summary
Megan Banks explains that her frequent anonymous transfers to
Shirley Shaw are because Shirley helped her open the grocery store she now runs, and that in return for the help, Megan had promised Shirley 2/3 of the profits. The donations are anonymous because Shirley cut contact with Megan, not wanting Megan to find out she was sick. Megan reveals Shirley had been lying about her poor relationship with her mother, and the attorneys decide to follow up with Shirley's mother, Paige.
Paige is unaware of her daughter's dire condition and breaks down upon learning of it. She complies with the
main character's request to check the bank account Shirley recently opened to help Paige invest, finding cash deposits roughly equal to the value of the withdrawn donations.
