Story Summary

This story takes place in Year 1. Marius is not yet in a relationship with the MC.

During a visit to a supermarket, Marius wins tickets to the Electrifying Night event in Stellis' Airport District the following week, which includes a stay at a nearby hotel. He invites the MC to join him. When the event time arrives and the two head to the Airport District, one of the first sights they see is a group of young graffiti artists, one of whom is pointed out by their guide as a genius. Marius looks at them longingly, explaining that graffiti is something he'd always wanted to try when he was younger. As the MC tries to encourage him to join, their guide points out that it's about to start raining and they should get checked in to their hotel soon. At the hotel, there is only one room remaining: a couple's suite. The MC agrees to take it due to the weather and popularity of the event, and Marius requests an extra bed. The staff's demeanor makes the MC wonder if something is wrong with the room.

After showering, the MC gets stuck in the bathroom due to a broken lock. To keep her company while the hotel finds someone to fix it, Marius begins telling a story about a fellow student in middle school named Fonzie who offered to teach him graffiti art. Before Fonzie could do so, something happened, but before Marius can explain, the locksmith arrives. Marius is stunned to find the locksmith is the "genius" graffiti artist from before, who is mute and communicates by typing on his phone. After she gets free, the MC goes down to reception with Marius to report the issue and ask about the locksmith. The receptionist explains the boy is named Andy, is 16 years old, has aphasia, and works odd jobs at late hours because his parents spent a lot of money on his treatment. She also points out the graffiti art around the lobby that was created by him.

The next morning, Marius and the MC explore the district the day before the Electrifying Night event. As they plan their route, they happen across Andy, who is being bullied by local art students who believe graffiti is nothing but property damage that makes art students look bad. Marius steps in to defend Andy, insisting that graffiti is like any other art in that its value depends on the artist's creativity and intent. The MC suggests Marius arrange an art contest at the event the next day. Marius and the students agree, and the group disperses. Andy thanks Marius for standing up for him, explains that he's painting on commission at this site, and he tries to direct them to their destination. Marius insists that Andy thank him by teaching him about graffiti art so that he can beat the students tomorrow.

Though he's reluctant to teach Marius because of his age and communication issues, Marius is enthusiastic, and Andy takes the pair to buy spray paint and begin to practice. Marius has some initial difficulty adapting from his oil painting techniques, unable to even paint a clear signature. After half a day working with Andy, Marius is already able to paint natural-looking, recognizable scenes, and they continue practicing together into the night.

On the day of the Electrifying Night event, Marius and the art students begin their contest, with Marius creating a piece with spray paint and the students creating a traditional painting. Rattled by Marius' confidence, the students try to vandalize his work by splattering their paint on it, ruining his composition. Marius takes the splatter and blends it into the painting, using it to make the work even better. The crowd votes for Marius' work by a wide margin, and the students apologize to both Marius and Andy.

Saddened that Marius and the MC are leaving the next day, Andy invites the two to eat at his family's street barbecue stand. At the stand, they meet Andy's parents and offer to help run the stand for a few hours. Marius compliments Andy heavily to his parents before offering to have Andy's aphasia treated for free by Pax Medical. As Andy's mother questions the program, Marius reveals his identity as Pax's CEO, and Andy's mother thanks Marius. At the end of the night, Marius and the MC fight over the last skewer. Andy gives the two a heartfelt note thanking them for spending time with him and resolving to like himself more in the future, and Marius finishes his story about his old friend, Fonzie, who was assaulted and forced to transfer schools for being close to Marius. He expresses that he's glad he could help Andy, and the MC encourages Marius to enjoy having love and dreams in his future.
