Edwin Burke is the husband of Jade Burke and adoptive father of Irene Burke. Described as a greedy scoundrel by his enemies and noted to be stubborn and manipulative even by those close to him, Edwin went missing along with his wife on January 28, 2030; the case was classed as missing persons until both bodies were recently found at Stellis Natural Park. Jun Choi, Irene's fiancé, is suspected of murdering the couple due to arguments he had with Edwin over Irene's bride price; this seems supported by evidence that with multiple blows to the head, the culprit must have been acting out of fear or extreme anger.[1][2][3][4]

Neighbors describe the Burkes as a happy family, though Edwin had large gambling debts that he somehow kept quite well hidden and avoided having them impact his family life. Edwin and Jade recently moved back from overseas and thus had fairly uncomplicated social relationships, mostly enjoying trips and dinners with their daughter and otherwise keeping to themselves.[3]

Story[edit | edit source]

Edwin obtained Irene from longtime friend Caroline Argall in exchange for his agreement to support Caroline unconditionally until she achieves the position of Rexing Property CEO. Ten years after that arrangement, the Burkes had fallen into decline and had outlived their usefulness to Caroline.[5] Unfortunately, Irene paid an ongoing price as currency for the deal, as Edwin had a hidden side of himself known only within the Burke household: a sadistic abuser of children, collecting video and photo evidence as well as toys the children had clung to during their ordeals. Aside from Irene, none of the children present in the evidence could be identified as having come from Stellis; after the evidence came to light, the SCPD sought international cooperation to get justice for anyone involved in the trafficking of Edwin's victims. His abuse did not merely stop at children, as he frequently retaliated against his wife for her attempts to protect the kids, and he would go on to force Irene to get an apartment in the same building as him so that he could continue to visit her well into adulthood. Irene murdered him as vengeance for his abuse.[6][7][8]

This evidence came to light due to the fact that Edwin owed a large gambling debt to The Abyss. Unable to pay his amount owing on time, Edwin agreed to instead pawn his secrets--his collection of videos and photos--in exchange for more time to pay. After this, he would use the fact that these secrets were in another's possession to blackmail Caroline and Irene for the money to cover his debt, buy back his secrets, and eventually repeat the cycle, having become addicted to the thrill of pawning the secrets and extorting the money. Edwin died with his collection still in the Abyss' possession; his debt was large enough that Irene estimated it would take her 6-12 months to buy them back.[9]
