Vyn "Depth of Desire"/Rewards

Story Summary

This story takes place in Year 3. Vyn is engaged to the MC.

Vyn and the MC arrive at Jibei University, where Vyn was an exchange student for a year, for a celebration. As the two discuss the numerous activities available, Vyn discusses a university custom in which men who attend must hand-make a corsage for their partners. A student offers to lead them to where the university is providing corsage materials; in order to receive flowers for the corsage, they have to participate in the "student for a day" activity. The MC asks to attend the psychology department's activity rather than the law department's. They receive case studies to discuss; the one that catches their attention involves a patient who committed suicide shortly after a psychological consultation, in which the patient and psychiatrist had an abnormal relationship. The psychiatrist was prosecuted for aiding and abetting suicide, and the goal of the discussion is to determine whether the psychiatrist was at fault. The MC suggests they study separately to avoid influencing each other's opinions.

The MC reads the patient's diary, in which the patient claims to have fallen in love with the psychiatrist because of the doctor's defenselessness. Confused by much of the technical terminology in the case study, she decides to go ask Vyn despite her earlier suggestion that they should study separately. She finds that Vyn has fallen asleep and is struck by an urge to touch him; when he wakes, she tries to pull away, but he says that she can do whatever she wants to him; she comments that their intimate touches feel different from usual.

After sulking a little about how long they were apart, Vyn agrees to discuss the case. He points out that a transference of the patient's intense feelings of love and dependence may have occurred, but the MC points out that all the documentation from the doctor's side is objective and medical in nature, so there's no way to gauge what he may have been feeling, nor whether he should hold blame for the patient's later suicide. Vyn suggests that they roleplay, with him taking the role of the patient, so the MC can guess what was in the psychiatrist's thoughts.

As Vyn quotes the patient's diary and improvises further in the patient's defenseless and dependent mindset, the MC has a strange thought: she enjoys the dependence and wants to push and see how far "the patient" is willing to go for her. She tests by suggesting the patient is hiding something from her, which Vyn responds to with a spiral of fear and self-doubt; she finds the ability to control someone else's emotions addictive and thinks the psychiatrist may have been deliberately taking advantage of the relationship and hurting the patient. Continuing the roleplay, she tells Vyn that his feelings are a delusion, and Vyn responds that he'll prove the feelings are real. The MC realizes how malicious and cruel the sudden detachment is and ends the roleplay; the two discuss how the MC felt during the exercise, and she considers whether it's possible that she feels the same way toward Vyn sometimes when faced with his defenselessness.

The two share their findings with their class, obtain their flowers, and attend the celebration party. Before the end of the night, Vyn has had more to drink than expected and needs to change his shirt due to wine stains. The MC goes into the bathroom to help when he's unable to unbutton his shirt on his own, but she feels overwhelmed by her desires and asks him to do it himself so she can leave. An attendant brings a fresh shirt and asks Vyn if he's alright before she can leave, so she gets flustered and accidentally escalates the situation as she tries to hide, then intentionally escalates the situation by continuing to remove his shirt and binding him with his tie when he wriggles. She realizes her strange thoughts about Vyn today are not from the case study, and she truly wants to possess him and command all of his attention when he's defenseless like this.

The MC asks if they can leave. Vyn agrees and suggests a walk around campus. The MC tries to deal with the thoughts she had toward Vyn in the dressing room that she feels she shouldn't have, but when Vyn asks whether she's alright, she claims she's just tired. He takes her to a secluded set of bleachers where he used to relax and confesses to feeling as intense a need for control over her as they theorized the case study psychiatrist did toward his patient. She admits to feeling the same way toward him and offers him full control if he wants it; Vyn wonders whether the desire to keep one's lover forever is instinctive and where that instinct will lead.

Vyn: Good afternoon, are you busy? I wanted a few moments of your time.

Vyn: It is nothing serious. I just received something and wanted to share it with you after class.

Vyn: All right, I will not keep you in suspense. They are the photos of us at Jibei University.

Vyn: Do you remember that underclassman we met? He took several photos of us. I already organized and emailed them to you.

Vyn: Yes... there are roughly twenty photos. Select the ones you like, and I will get them developed to put in our "private album."

Vyn: My favorite photo? I would have to think about that before answering. After all, I love any picture of us together.

Vyn: Hmm... Oh, I know—it is the photo of us when we first arrived at the campus, and you "interviewed" me.

Vyn: At the time, you were bathed in sunlight, your hair blowing gently in the wind, your face lighting up with a smile...

Vyn: And I was the one before you, the sole focus of your attention. There was a sense that we were the only two people left in the world.

Vyn: My description painted a vivid picture? Well, my memories associated with you are always precious and unforgettable.

Vyn: Oh, there was another photo that I liked. Would you like to guess which one it is?

Vyn: A reward for guessing it correctly...? How about you tell me what you want?

Vyn: To see me immediately? That is not fair...

Vyn: I want you to receive that reward no matter what your answer is.

Vyn: Then... wait for me at home. I will tell you the correct answer in person.
